MYRA LINK 1937~ 2023 It is with great sadness that the family of Myra Arline Link announces her passing on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
Myra was born on September 19, 1937 to Phil & Regina Baker. Myra is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years Victor, son Terry (Dorothy), son Richard (David Moloney), and son-in-law Trevor James; she very sadly had to say good bye to her daughter Jennifer James in August of this year.
Myra was born and raised in Medicine Hat and lived her life in the city. She grew up in the “flats”, and loved hanging out with her cousins, and the kids on fourth street and surrounding blocks. This is where she met her best friend Melinda Link (now Melinda Price) and Melinda’s brother Vic, whom she married.
Myra was a cheerleader in high school and was Medicine Hat Teen Queen. She also worked as a court reporter in the early 60s and once her children were grown, she returned to work at the Medicine Hat College in the Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts departments. Her incredibly organized nature was of great help to the artists, students, and instructors who shared her passions.
She always took pride in her appearance, whether it was a new hair style or an outfit in the latest fashion.
Her great passion was art: literature, music, and the visual arts. She’d always have the maximum number of books on reserve at the library, and she was instrumental in getting many best sellers into the Medicine Hat Library system. Myra had an encyclopedic memory of all the authors she had ever read, and could easily tell you all the books she’d read by a particular author.
While her contemporaries were listening to rock ‘n’ roll, she and her cousin Ken were dedicated jazzophiles, spending many afternoons listening to their favourite artists. She felt privileged to see many of them live, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Cleo Lane, Stan Getz, Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand and Diana Krall. Her and Vic’s house was filled with books, records, and beautiful artwork including photos by Ansel Adams; prints by Picasso, the Group of Seven, and Ettore DeGrazi; and drawings by her favourite local artist, Jim Marshall.
She and Vic travelled to Mexico and Europe for Oldtimers’ Hockey tournaments, and to London to visit Jennifer and Trevor. Stories about her trip to New York with Melinda, and to Los Angeles to see Barbra Streisand, were among her favourite reminiscences. Myra and Vic spent many winters in Arizona and they also enjoyed time at the family’s summer cabin at Lake Newell.
Due to mobility issues, Myra spent her last few years at Cypress View and most recently River Ridge Senior Village, where she knew everyone’s names, and was grateful for the care she received.
As per Myra’s request, there will not be a formal service. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to remember Myra, a donation to the Medicine Hat Library would be appropriate. To leave a message of condolence you may visit www.pattisonfuneralhome.com.
