ROMAIN MAES December 22, 1941 ~ December 28, 2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Romain Stephan Maes in Medicine Hat on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at the age of 82 years. Romain was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Maes. He will be fondly remembered by his children: Michael (Dana) Maes, Michelle (Elliott) Wylie, David (Tracy) Montgomery and Susan Kessler as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Romain immigrated from Belgium to Calgary with his family as a young child. After a long business career, he and Pat ran a successful insurance business in Sherwood Park.
Once retired, they settled in Medicine Hat where he was the “caretaker” of St. Patrick’s Church, and was very involved in the board of the condominium where he lived. A man of simple pleasures, he loved to read a good book and to learn; he was up to date on world events and was always open to a discussion or debate. Most of all he enjoyed sharing a meal and a drink with family and friends. Romain spent most evenings on his deck watching the sunset, preferably under the glow of red, outdoor Christmas lights. He was loved and will be greatly missed!

Cremation has taken place and a family graveside service will be held in Calgary at a late date with Father John Maes officiating. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at www.cooksouthland.com). Romain received the best possible care, and as such, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice, 156-3 Street NE Medicine Hat, AB, T1A 5M1.
