JEANNE SULZ 1938 – 2024
Jeannette Laverne Patricia SULZ (Erman) passed away suddenly and peacefully Friday, January 12, 2024, at her residence in Meadow Ridge care home, Medicine Hat, Alberta. She was 85. It is with great sadness but so many cherished memories that we announce her leaving us at this time. Jeanne leaves her sons, Aaron (Jill), Bing (Pam), Carey (Kim); grandchildren, Brendan (Kerry), Kaley Graham (Joel), Keaton (Chelsea Marshall), Elliott, Hannah (Michael Ralston); great grandchildren, Shea, Quinn and Jovie. Also, brother and sister-in-law Arden and Karen Erman, brothers-in-law Grant Curtis and Stanley Sulz along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jeanne is predeceased by her husband Marvin, parents Benjamin and Annie Erman, parents in-law Edward and Natalia Sulz; brother, Vernon and Eileen Erman, sister, Joanne Curtis, brother-in-law, Peter and sisters-in-law, Beatrice Hirsch, Gail Sulz, Lillian Kohls.
Jeanne was born on January 31, 1938, in Maple Creek Saskatchewan. She was the second of four children to Benjamin and Annie. She was primarily raised on the family farm Southeast of Golden Prairie known as the Begley Place. Only fluent in German as a preschooler, Jeanne started school in the one room Big Stick schoolhouse, one mile from their farm. Jeanne loved her teachers, often reminiscing fondly of Mrs. Hockley and Mrs. Violet Horton. She had wonderful memories of getting to and from school, the simpleness of the schoolhouse, art instruction, particularly knitting and clay pottery. She eventually went on to school in Golden Prairie where she finished high school. She had so many wonderful memories of her childhood and we are so fortunate that she was able to share many of them with us over her lifetime. She often commented how incredibly good her parents were to her and her siblings.
For one year after high school, Jeanne worked for the Bank of Montreal in Maple Creek. She enjoyed this short period and particularly with friends Esther Wade and friend and roommate Betty May (Cochrane).
On June 1, 1956, Jeanne Erman married Marvin Sulz at New Kronsfeld Church with the reception held at the Golden Prairie Hall. They immediately moved to Battrum, Saskatchewan where Marvin was working for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Shortly thereafter moving to Vanguard, and subsequently Abbey, Saskatchewan to live and work. During this time, Jeanne gave birth to her three sons, Aaron born February 12, 1957, in Cabri, Saskatchewan; Bing born February 21, 1958, in Cabri, Saskatchewan; Carey born September 27, 1961, in Vanguard, Saskatchewan. In June of 1967, Jeanne and Marvin purchased the King George Hotel in Burstall, Saskatchewan. This was a courageous and bold step for them. Together they built an incredibly successful business. Five years later and subsequent to an immensely positive life-changing experience they sold the hotel business and moved on. Jeanne and Marvin often talked of the hard work but wonderful memories and experiences during these five years. They developed deep friendships they maintained for the rest of their lives. Building on this business success, Jeanne and Marvin were able to achieve their ultimate goal in August of 1972 by purchasing and moving to the Jake and Annie Erman farm in Golden Prairie Saskatchewan. It was here where they finished their working lives.
Jeanne was a hard-working farming partner. She loved the farm life, always actively involved in all aspects of farming. She also loved her garden, flowers, cooking, baking. She was a wonderful devoted mother raising her three sons and actively involved in their lives. While on the farm, Jeanne was always an active community member participating in numerous community groups and organizations. Again Jeanne developed numerous life long relationships and friendships during the farm years and frequently talked of her wonderful memories.
Jeanne and Marvin retired to Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1996 and for many years thereafter lived in their beautiful home in Meadowlands Estates. During this time, Jeanne and Marvin continued spending many winters in Southern California, Arizona, and Texas. They also were fortunate to travel much of the world and enriching their lives doing so. They loved spending time with their children and grandchildren and were actively involved in all their lives.
It was during these retirement years that Jeanne was able to indulge and spend more time on her art. She was a talented artist. She was skilled in knitting, quilting, but also talented at drawing and painting. She took art courses and even did some teaching. She spent more time reading and continued gardening. She did enjoy sports throughout life, particularly curling when she was younger, golfing when living in Medicine Hat.
Subsequent to Marvin passing on, Jeanne was no longer able to live on her own. In 2020, Jeanne moved to assisted living in Medicine Hat. With her health insidiously declining, she eventually required long-term care home placement in 2023.
Jeanne will be missed. She was a wonderful person. She was immensely kind, loving, compassionate, caring, devoted, understanding, concerned, interested, curious and artistic. Please rest peacefully.
