CARREL “JEAN” LEHR (NEE FLEXHAUG)
Carrel “Jean” Lehr (nee Flexhaug), 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 7, 2024 at Covenant Care, St. Marguerite Manor in Calgary, Alberta. She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and business woman. She was born December 25, 1933 in Welling, Alberta, Canada. She just celebrated her 90th birthday with family.
Jean is survived by her 5 children, Kathleen ( Claude) Smith, Jacob “Jack” Lehr (Karin Gashus), Bonnie ( Brian) Williams, Lorena (Duane) Douglas and Donald Lehr; her brother, Vern Flexhaug; sister-in-law, Bernice Lehr; 19 grandchildren, Luke (Andrea), Daniel (Kathy), Tyler, Ben, Jay, Brock (Bethany), Jason (Christina), Josh (Tara Joi), Brittany (Justin), Tamara (Scott), Cory, Kristin (Derek), Trent, Trevor, Thomas, Clayton, Nathan, Wyatt, and Preston; and 43 great-grandchildren. She has many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews which she loved dearly also. ( deceased). She was predeceased by her husband, Jack “Jacob” Lehr; parents, Peter Flexhaug and Lorena Richardson; siblings, Lenora, Leonard, Gladys, Lester Gordon, Robert, Richard and Linda.
She grew up around the Raymond area. Jean learned the love of poetry from her mother which brought her to excel in elocution and competed in reciting poetry. She worked on the family farm which included hoeing sugar beets. The Flexhaug home was a place of gathering on a Sunday with extended family for dinner. The highlight of each summer was attending the Raymond Parade and Stampede on July 1. After graduating from high school, she was hired as a teacher supervisor of a one room schoolhouse near Manyberries. She attended a community dance there, and that is where she met Jack Lehr. They married on May 13, 1953, in Raymond, Alberta. Eventually, they built a home in Medicine Hat, where they raised their 5 children. Jean held many teaching positions in her church for the youth and adult classes, forging forever friendships. She would consider herself as a shy, quiet person though she became the first women grocery store manager for Horne and Pit-field (IGA Grocery store), and later in life she served as the first woman on the St. Mary’s Irrigation Board for two terms. She was always a cheerleader for her husband and children, encouraging them to do their best in all they did.
Thank you to all those who lovingly cared for our mom at St. Marguerite Manor. All efforts were very much appreciated.
The Funeral Service will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Royal Oak Ward Building (81 Royal Elm Drive NW, Calgary, Alberta) on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. with a family viewing one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will be served after the service before the interment at the Temple Hill Cemetery in Raymond, Alberta, Canada. Hello I just found out about your Mother while visiting George and Irene McWiliams I must tell you on the day she died I was looking up your family on Facebook too see how some of you have been. It is so strange that it happened on the same day she died. I need to tell your family how I LOVED your Mother Growing up in Medicine Hat your family was a constant in our family. My Mother Loved Kati and taught her in primary. You alway came to visit my mother when in Medicine Hat. Bonnie you were Baptised with Vicki . Your Dear Mother came too my Mother’s funeral, Sister Hill brought her It was so good too see her again. Thank you for the memories .
