Joyce Darlene Brotzell (Schatz/Reich) was born on March 15, 1943, in Medicine Hat, AB, and passed away on May 9, 2024, in Medicine Hat, AB, at the age of 81 years.
She was the middle child of John and Lea Schatz and is survived by her loving husband and best friend, William “Bill” Brotzell. She is also survived by one sister, Myrlene (Eddie) Grant of Juneau, Alaska; one brother, Dale (Sally) Schatz of Summerland, BC; six nieces and nephews; eight great nieces and nephews; one great-great nephew; step-daughter, Jennifer (Lyndon); and three step-grandchildren, Samantha (Nick) Trollope, Emily Millen, and David Rody. She was predeceased by her father, John, in 1996, and her mother, Lea, in 2005.
She attended Elm Street School for grades 1-4 and Connaught School for grades 4-6. She then attended Alexandra Junior High School for grades 7-9 and she graduated from Medicine Hat High School in 1961 after completing the commercial course, including shorthand and typing, which she loved.
Immediately upon graduation, Joyce started her career as a secretary for the superintendent of school at Medicine Hat School District No. 76 for 11 years. She moved to Vernon, BC in 1972 working for a court reporter and the family court system for four years. Upon moving back to Medicine Hat in 1976, she worked for Brower Insurance Co. for eight months. Followed by working for the Justice Department (judicial clerk) of the Province of Alberta for 25 years, retiring on November 14, 2002.
Joyce loved to go travelling and camping. Her hobbies included walking, bike riding, floor curling, bowling, and golfing until she was no longer able to do these things. She spent many hours in her yard planting flowers, watching the birds, and looking after her dog, Shadow. In her later years, Joyce spent many hours on the computer, colouring, doing word finds, and scrapbooking.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery, 1280 Gershaw Drive SW & 10 Avenue SW, Medicine Hat, AB, on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 2:00 pm. If wanting to attend, please meet inside the cemetery gates at 1:50 pm. There will be a Memorial Service held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 3:00 pm with Pastor Ed Lehman officiating.
