Dieter Engler of Medicine Hat passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the age of 80 years. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Shirley; his son Mike (Donna), daughter Melissa (Mike); grandchildren, Tyson (Erica), Allison (Quintin), Cody (Miriah) and great grandchildren Roman, Laikyn, Brooks and Audrey; by his sisters Hannah Smail, Kuni (Steve) Cox, Carol Engler and his brother Walter (Marcia) Engler; brother-in-law Eddie (Marilyn) Moss as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Augustina Lehr, stepfather John Lehr, sister Eva Medd, brother Albrecht Engler, brother-in-law Brian Smail and nephew Mark Smail. Heinz “Dieter” Engler was born on January 12, 1944 at Krembkau, Germany. While in Germany he worked on a barge on the river Rhine until he immigrated to Canada. Farming was always an interest which led to his employment for his Aunt Lili on the farm south of Medicine Hat. Throughout his younger years, he pursued carpentry and received his trade papers at the University of Lethbridge. He helped many family members and friends with their projects. Following his carpentry career, Dieter purchased a share with Deluxe Central Cab company and drove cab for many years. Racing pigeons was an integral part of his life, travelling to many shows, meeting life long friends, and winning many awards. Dieter was also very skilled as a fly fisherman, spending a lot of time in the Cypress Hills. The arrival of his grandchildren then great grandchildren was a great thrill for him. He was an awesome, husband, brother, dad, grandpa and opa and will be missed dearly by all. To honour Dieter’s request, no funeral service will be held. Dieter’s family would like to thank Dr. Bastos, Dr. Malik, ICUnurses: Trisha, Lilia and Trina as well as Dr. Bharwani, Dr. Majeed, Dr. Dirker, Louis from Respiratory and Shaun from the Physio department.
