July 31, 1937 ~ June 20, 2024
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Vernon Martin, our beloved husband, father, grand-father, brother, uncle and friend on Thursday, June 20, 2024. Wayne was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and after a long battle, he passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with his family by his side, at the age of 86 years.
Wayne was born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan on July 31, 1937 to Vernon and H. Doris Martin and was raised on the family farm near Cadillac. On August 12, 1959, Wayne married Judy Klath. In 1975, together they purchased the family farm, where they farmed and raised their three daughters. His passion was his family and the farm. Wayne was very involved with the community and served 32 years as a devoted Division 6 councillor for the R.M. Of Auvergne #76. He enjoyed raising Gelbvieh cattle and being involved in the 4-H program with his daughter, Carmen, through the years.
Many summers were spent at the cabin in Cypress Hills with family and friends. In 2006, they sold the family farm and officially retired to Medicine Hat to spend their golden years, where he actively spent his time biking, bowling, golfing and walking his adored puppies on every trail imaginable. He was truly a kind friend to all who knew him.
Wayne leaves behind his loving wife, Judy; three daughters, Colleen (Wayne) Baron; grandchildren, Cody (Erika) and their children, Jonathan, Madison and Jaxson; Megan (Corey) Black and their children, Paisley and Gage; Jesse (Clay) Williams and their children, Harper and Barrett; Crystal Martin and Carmen (Jeff) Watson; grandsons, Connor and Ethan. He also leaves behind his brothers, Lawrence Martin and Bill Martin (Sharon); sister, Catherine Dubourt as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and so many dear friends. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Vernon and H. Doris Martin; in-laws, Margaret Martin, Lorraine Martin Morton and John Dubourt; niece, Lori Martin and great-nephew, Daniel Backmann.
The family would like to thank the doctor’s and nursing staff of the Medicine Hat Hospital, the ALS Society and the Home Care team for their exceptionally compassionate care and kindness.
A Graveside Celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. A time of fellowship will follow thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Relatives and friends attending the graveside celebration should gather at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 -13 Street S.W., on Tuesday between 1:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. to join the procession to gravesite for the celebration.
