1936 ~ JOYCE RASMUSSEN ~ 2024
Joyce Catherine Rasmussen (nee Peter) passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the age of 88 years. Joyce will be lovingly missed by her son, Duane (Janine); her daughter, Wendy (James); her grandchildren, Cale (Cheryl), Michael (Lauren), Jay (Sarah), and Sarah (Tait); and her great-grandchildren, Tyson, Ethan, Quinn, Hadley, Hazel, Blayke, Ellie, Ruby, Cooper, and Colby. She will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Gladys, Carole, and Mary Rose; her brother-in-law, Dick, and her very good friend, Jeannine.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Gordon; her parents, Hilda and Harry Peter; her brother, Arthur; and her sister, Mae. Joyce was born in Medicine Hat in 1936 and raised in the Elkwater area. She received her education in Elkwater (up to Grade 9), Irvine (Grade 10), and boarded at the Dormitory in Medicine Hat for Grades 11 and 12. Joyce also took a French Course at the Banff School of Fine Arts one summer. She married Gordon Rasmussen in 1957. For the next 37 years, she was an active member of the community chaperoning school trips, a Cub Leader, a member of the Alberta Women’s Institute and the Orion Community Association and so much more. In 1994, Joyce and Gordon retired to Medicine Hat. Joyce loved to walk, whether it be out on the farm or in Medicine Hat upon retirement, she continued to cruise around the community with her walker until shortly before her passing. Upon retiring to Medicine Hat, she also took up golfing and bowling. She especially loved the Sweet Grass Hills (“they are my talisman”), Red Rock Coulee, and the Ranger Station. Celtic music was always a favourite and she loved her birds! Joyce was fortunate to have some wonderful travels with Gordon and many family and friends. But most of all, Joyce loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they adored her. The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Home for their kind and compassionate care of Joyce in her last few weeks and to AgeCare Valleyview for the role they played in assisting Joyce in her transition to retirement living. The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, #1 Dunmore Road SE, AB Medicine Hat with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. One Condolence for “JOYCE RASMUSSEN”

  1. Linda and Mike Baisley says:

    Dear Duane and Wendy,
Our heartfelt condolences to you and your families. Your mom held a very special place in my heart. She was truly a pillar of the Orion community. Mom and dad loved the trips with your mom and dad – the stories they would tell. When Mike and I were about to be married, she and MaryLou decided Mike needed to learn how to dance. They took him to the dance floor and he has never stopped dancing since. Joyce was so kind and always had a smile on her face. Her warmth and generosity will be missed by all who knew her.
