1931 ~ DEAN MCKELVIE ~ 2024
Ronald “Dean” McKelvie, of Medicine Hat, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital due to complications following surgery. He was born on October 17, 1931, in Alsask, SK, and lived on the family farm near Benton. He attended school in Alsask and delivered groceries for his grandparent’s store. In 1961, Dean became a self-employed farmer, purchasing his uncle Raymond Shaw’s land near Benton. On December 22, 1962, Dean married Edna Doreen Ireland in Oyen and they began their married life together, continuing to farm in Benton for 23 years. The couple travelled together to many countries across the world. Dean and Edna wintered in Arizona for many years, both very active in their Apache Junction Park. Dean was an avid golfer and an excellent “8 Ball” pool player. In his younger years, he played and coached hockey and he also played baseball. Dean has always been the Blue Jay’s #1 fan. Life at Park Meadows was slowing down but Dean continued to golf three mornings per week and meet up with the guys at the ClubHouse for coffee and a game of pool Monday through Friday. Dean will be deeply missed by family and friends- he made such an impression on all those who were lucky enough to have met him. Dean is survived by his niece, Trish (Larry) Belliveau of Halifax, NS; brothers-in-law, Ken (Kate) Ireland of High River, AB, and Roger (Jackie) Ireland of Wetaskiwin, AB; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.
