NORMAN SMITH January 10, 1950 ~ February 28, 2025
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Norman Smith. He passed away in Medicine Hat on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the age of 75 years.
Norman was born in Medicine Hat on January 10, 1950, to James and Kathleen Smith.
His memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 52 years, Norma; daughter, Kathy (Kevin) and their three children, Garret, Allison and Seltic (Austin) and their two children, Ryker and Stratton; son, Kenneth (Gillian) and Kiyla. Norm is also survived by one brother, Richard (Patty). He was predeceased by his parents as well as his step-mother and one brother, Jim.
Norman was a long-time businessman who at the age of 14, started working at Blacks Sports Center with his father. He later purchased the business from the Black family. In 1992, Norm sold Blacks and moved on to other endeavors which included being a part of the Downtown Business Revitalization Program for 4 years. He later purchased Logos Embroidery where he worked until he retired.
Norman was very involved in the Medicine Hat Community where he coached hockey starting at the age of 20, continuing to coach for many years. He also enjoyed playing hockey and was known by the other players as ‘Stormin Normin’ the goaltender. He played Old Timers hockey until the age of 65.
Norm was a long-time Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede member. He served on a variety of committees which eventually led to him serving as the President in 2013 – 2014.
Norm spent many years supporting his wife by volunteering at the CNIB. He was nominated by his peers and awarded the Civic Recognition Award in 2003.
He was a long-time supporter of the Medicine Hat Tigers and held season tickets for many years, attending many of those games with his granddaughter, Seltic. It was also no secret that Norm was a die-hard Detroit Red Wings fan!
Norm loved spending time with his family and friends and he will be deeply missed by the many whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Norm’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. A time of fellowship will follow immediately thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. Norm’s service will be live-streamed. Those who cannot attend but wish to experience his celebration should visit the Cook Southland website and select the View Broadcast button on the home page at service time.
