Elsie Christina Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Cliff Smith, passed away peacefully at River Ridge Nursing Home on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, at the age of 94 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Elaine (Randy) Jahnke, Terry (Gayle) Smith, Raymond (Paulette) Smith, (twin) Doug (Crystal) Smith, (twin) Donnie (Dixie) Smith, and Garry (Dawna) Smith; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Elsie was born in Tompkins, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1930. She was raised in the Painsville District, north of Tompkins, with her three older siblings, Norman, Frank, and Myrtle (Tootie). She met her future husband, Cliff, at a dance at the White Craig School, and they were married April 25, 1951, in Medicine Hat. Elsie and Cliff continued to live on the Smith family homestead, where they operated the family farm and ranch. In 1976, they purchased a ranch in the Mendham district and operated it until 1994, when they retired to Medicine Hat. Family was very important to Elsie. Elsie enjoyed attending family functions and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, golf, and in colder weather, daily walks around the mall. She loved going to coffee, especially ‘Mendham’ coffee at Zellers, and in later years at the mall. Elsie and Cliff were fortunate to enjoy traveling to many countries, including England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as numerous trips to Cuba. Following Cliff’s passing in July 2017 and Elsie’s onset of dementia, she moved to River Ridge Nursing home, where she remained until her passing. The family of Elsie Smith wish to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of River Ridge for the excellent care they provided to Elsie over the last 8 years. A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate Elsie’s life.
