DAVID ANDREW BERTSCH
Posted: June 14th, 2025 DAVID ANDREW BERTSCH August 20th, 1949 ~ December 19th, 2024 David Andrew was born on August 20th, 1949, an identical twin brother to Dale Marcus in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. They relocated to North Battleford where Dave attended school; during his teen years he participated in the Militia and volunteered as a firefighter. He attended Molers’ Barbering School in Regina in 1968/69 and worked with his Dad at ‘Joe’s Barbershop’.
After four years of barbering, he decided to change careers to a Correctional Officer. He was hired by the Alberta Solicitor General Dept. in March, 1973 working as a CO 1 at the Peace River Correctional Centre. Here he met his wife of 51 years, Bonnie (Ortt). They married December 1st, 1973.
Promoted to CO 3 they transferred to the Lethbridge Correctional Centre May, 1976; they were blessed with three children, Brent David, Darren William, and Krystal Lee. In 1987 Dave was promoted again and began work at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre he’s still remembered as “DDO Dave”. Dave did “life” (35 years) in the jail system retiring in May, 2005.
Dave enjoyed being retired. He golfed, worked on projects and did quite a bit of travelling. He enjoyed wintering in Barbados.
Dave was blessed with four grandchildren: Brent/Corinne (Taylor) welcomed Miarah and Anayah; Darren/ Erin (Dubiel) brought Wrenn and Parks into Dave’s world.
Dave was predeceased by parents Joseph and Genevieve (Wandler), his in-laws, Bill and ‘Freddie’ Ortt; his brothers Wilfred, Dale, and Mel; he was post deceased by his brother Cyril. Keeping his memory alive are Bonnie, Brent and family, Darren and family, and Krystal (& her poodle Harry!). Also left to remember him, sister Marilyn (Paul) Hagerty, brothers Allan (Tina) Bertsch, and Murray (Elaine) Bertsch,
Dave passed away December 19th, 2024, after suffering a severe stroke. He was interred at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery, Medicine Hat, Alberta, with Pastor Ken Edel of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating.
