GERTRUDE MOYNES November 29, 1932 – December 21, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Moynes on Sunday, December 21, 2025, while surrounded by her loving family. Gertie is pre-deceased by her husband, Jim (2012); parents, Eric and Erna Zordel; sisters, Elfriede (in infancy) and Dorothy as well as her brother, Herb.
Gertie spent her entire childhood on the farm at Divide, Saskatchewan and enjoyed every aspect of the farming life. She attended elementary school at Divide and completed her high school diploma in Frontier, Saskatchewan, furthering her education at Normal School in Moose Jaw to attain her teacher’s certificate there. She taught briefly at Lowell school in a one-room schoolhouse located one mile from her eventual homestead. It was while living and teaching in the area around Eastend that she met her future husband, Jim Moynes, whom she married in July of 1955. Jim and Gertie settled and made their life on the farm just north of where he grew up, and lived and thrived there until 2012. She gave up teaching to focus on the farm and raise her family. The farm was her greatest achievement, and she enjoyed every aspect of life as a farm wife and the many lifelong friendships she and Jim made along the way. She took great pride in her yard which was always kept in a meticulous fashion, and her large garden which was extremely well tended and prolific. Her tomato crop was legendary, providing delicious canned tomatoes for her family’s use throughout the year. Due to Jim’s illness in 2012, they moved permanently into Medicine Hat where she enjoyed her new surroundings and friendships made there.
Gertie is survived by her sons: Ronald (Linda) and his children, Tyler (Shelby) and Mykayla (Shawn Jones); Brian (Darcy) and his children, Riley (Alice) and Raegan (Eric Tessier); four great-grandchildren, Sierra and Emerson Jones, Felix Tessier and Penelope Moynes as well as another great-grandson arriving in March. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Linda Zordel and was blessed with the love and support of several nieces and nephews and their families.
A private family interment and graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery near Eastend, SK. at a later date. (Condolences may be expressed by visiting our website at www.cooksouthland.com ). Honoured to serve the family is
