SHIRLEY JEAN SUTHERLAND
Posted: February 7th, 2026 SHIRLEY JEAN SUTHERLAND 1934-2026 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mom Shirley Jean Sutherland of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Charles in 2020, her oldest son Robin, in 201, and her youngest son Bruce, in 2024 as well as her parents, Bill and Margaret Leach.
Mom was born in Empress, Alberta but at a very young age her family moved to Medicine Hat where she spent just about all of her life. She spent many years working in the office at the Medicine Hat Co-op before retiring and focused on quilting on knitting which she excelled at. Mom and Dad were active church members and contributed much of their time to various activities at Westminster United Church. They both loved to travel and spent many hours on the highways of Canada going from coast to coast as well as from north to south in much of our country. They also made trips to the UK and New Zealand but Canada was their favorite place to see. Mom was an excellent gardener and we were treated to a lot of wonderful meals out of the produce from her garden.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, her eldest daughter Heather (Stan) Hirsch, her youngest daughter Holly (Kirk Woiken) Sutherland and Valeria Good (Bruce Sutherland).
She will be very missed by her grandchildren Tara and William Sutherland, Charles (Holly) Sutherland, Kimberley Hirsch and Kerry (Anna Kauffman) Hirsch as well as her great grandchildren
Willow, Cali, Felix, Sophia and Wynn. Shirley will be deeply missed by her sister, Doreen Storey and her brother Jim (Delores) Leach and their families as well as her many friends in Medicine Hat.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Holyrood Extended Care Home in Edmonton for the supportive care shown to our mom and to us while she was a resident.
Shirley’s life will be remembered by her family and friends without the proceedings of a formal service. Please remember her in your own way.
