DOUG EDWARD MURRAY

Adventurer, writer, scholar, instructor, general knowledge specialist, sportsman, and humanitarian. Douglas Edward Murray packed more experiences into one lifetime than most people could manage in several. Guided by an endless curiosity, a love of learning, and a determination to make the most of every opportunity, Doug lived life on his own terms until his passing on June 5, 2026.
Doug brought excitement, curiosity, and excellence to Alberta from the day he was born on May 14, 1954, near Crossfield. Raised by Edward and Camille alongside his sisters, Elaine and Margery, Doug embraced country life to the fullest. Together with his cousin and lifelong best friend, Ray, they made the most of every opportunity, developing mechanical skills, a deep appreciation for the natural world, and a strong work ethic along with more than a few memorable adventures and antics together.
A lifelong learner, Doug loved sharing knowledge and helping others succeed. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Calgary and spent ten years teaching in the Calgary school system. Never one to follow a single path, he added another career as Head Chef at the Red Deer Lodge and helped serve thousands of visitors during the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Returning to education, Doug became a pioneer in culinary instruction, creating online cooking classes where students developed and prepared their own menus.
His journey then took him north, teaching throughout the Northwest Territories in Indigenous communities, including those around Great Bear Lake. Even then, Doug found time to become a Justice of the Peace, purchase a share in a Cessna 172, earn his wings as a pilot, and marry a chief’s daughter.
Heading south to Missouri, Doug became an armorer for a SWAT team and an instructor with the National Rifle Association.
Nearly forty years of health challenges transformed Doug into something of a pharmaceutical expert. Despite having every reason to complain, he rarely did. Instead, he faced life’s obstacles with resilience, determination, and a sense of humor that never left him. Those who knew him often joked that Doug had spent decades successfully cheating death and Doug was always happy to laugh along.
During the final eight years of his life, Doug formed and supported countless friendships, often helping others through difficult end-of-life journeys. He was deeply appreciated by many, including Merle and the staff at Meadowlands, who came to know him well during his time there. Doug never ran out of praise for the staff of the Sunnyside Palliative Care Unit, whose compassion, kindness, and care meant so much to him.
Doug leaves behind his beloved cousin and lifelong friend, Ray Murray (Debbie), along with Ray’s family: Brynn and Tessa (Jamie, Ruby, and Lily). They will continue to cherish his stories, wisdom, and example. He will also be greatly missed by his dear friends, Doug and Grace MacDougall, and by the many others whose lives he touched through his kindness, knowledge, humor, and friendship.
After decades of proving the odds wrong, Doug has set off on one final adventure.
