FRIESEN, Neil “Cornelius”

Posted: June 22nd, 2026

IN LOVING MEMORY OF BIG RED NEIL “CORNELIUS” FRIESEN – known affectionately as Dad, Grandpa, Gramps, Pops, and Big Red – aged 83, of Lethbridge, Alberta, threw his last pitch on June 7, 2026, surrounded by an abundance of love.
Born on March 31, 1943 in Neulage, Saskatchewan, Red will be remembered for his striking red hair, his blazing fast-pitch arm, his unmistakable radio voice, love of music, infectious laughter, tight hugs, and his unwavering belief that the Toronto Maple Leafs will one day win it all – and that McDonald’s still has the best coffee around.
Neil grew up in a small Mennonite farming community near Saskatoon and Fastball was his sport! His team, the Weyburn Canadians won the 1972 Canadian Fastball Championship thanks in part to his amazing pitching performance, and was later inducted into Saskatchewan’s Sports Hall of Fame.
Pops never lost his appreciation for the simple things in life, especially a bowl of borscht and a good farmer sausage. Whether he was strumming his guitar, sharing advice, or telling stories from his ball-playing days, he always left a lasting impression and was easy to love.
Red is lovingly survived by his wife of 61 years, Edna Friesen; his daughters, Laura (Stewart), Shelly (Dave), and Krista (Ron); his grandchildren, Amanda (Darrin), Nicole (Tom), Natasha (Jeff), Erin (Hoan), Sean (Tracie), and Makayla; and his great-grandchildren, Taeya, Brynn, Mia, Karter, Norah, Sadie, and Charlotte; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
True to form, Grandpa kept us laughing until the very end. His humour brought light to every room, and it is that gift we will cherish forever and miss the most.
“Love you forever.” A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in a local park – most likely over a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken.
