It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved matriarch, friend and neighbour, Ruth Janice Bevan, on June 15, 2026, at the age of 76 years.
Born in Dodsland, Saskatchewan, on July 14, 1949, Ruth spent much of her life in Medicine Hat, where she raised her family, built her career and became a familiar and well-loved member of the community. She worked at Cook’s Funeral Chapel for many years before becoming the manager of Hat News and Tobacco, where she was known for her warm smile, sharp wit and genuine interest in people.
Ruth leaves to cherish her memory her children, Janice (Mike) Berger and Jay Bevan; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren; niece Jascinta Beva; nephews Colin (Bonnie) Bevan and Conrad Bevan as well as extended family members and many dear friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd Bevan, Joan and Reginald Wedel; sister, Ann Kappelman and her brother, Anthony Bevan.
Ruth will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty, wisdom, humour, love of animals and her remarkable ability to make people feel seen and valued. Fiercely independent and quick with both a laugh and an opinion, she left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the health care teams for their compassionate care to Ruth.
In honouring Ruth’s wishes, no formal service will be held. She will be laid to rest in Dodsland, Saskatchewan at a later date. Those wishing to honour Ruth’s memory may make a donation to their local animal shelter and, if so inclined, raise a shot of vodka in her honour.
