DAVID COTA SR.
Posted: June 27th, 2026 DAVID COTA SR. October 30, 1953 ~ June 24, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that the family of David Dennis Cota announce his passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the age of 72 years.
He leaves behind his children, Tara Lee Traxel and David Cota Jr; their mother, Sharon as well as many friends he met over the years. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Mary Cota and his father, Charles Cota.
Dave was born on October 30, 1953, in Leader, Saskatchewan and was raised in the close-knit community of Sceptre, where he developed the strong work ethic and quiet determination that would stay with him throughout his life.
On April 19, 1980, Dave married Sharon Cranston at St. Mary’s Church in Medicine Hat. Dave spent his career doing what he knew best. From 1977 to 1984, he worked as a toolpush with Westburn Drilling before becoming a drilling consultant with Buffalo Consulting from 1984 to 1987. In 1987, Dave found his true calling in livestock hauling, operating for DJ’s – D&D Livestock, Grace Cattle Carriers and later Dave Cota Trucking. He remained dedicated to the industry until his retirement in 2022. Dave took immense pride in his work, his custom Freightliner trucks and the reputation he earned through years of honesty, reliability and hard work.
Those who knew Dave will remember his dry sense of humour, the famous raised eyebrow that often said more than words ever could and the quiet giggle that usually followed. He was a true gentleman with a kind and generous heart. Dave was a supportive father who always put his family first. His greatest accomplishment in life was the family he loved so deeply.
Dave found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed people watching over a cup of coffee, reading books, history, trivia, collecting model tanks, admiring cars and heavy trucks, listening to music and spending time at home. He loved horses, guitars, college football and had a lifelong appreciation for all animals. He also played recreational hockey as a teenager and never lost his love of the game.
Some of Dave’s happiest memories included welcoming his children into the world, purchasing the family farm, buying his custom Freightliner trucks, visiting his dear friend Bernie Klettke and enjoying holidays with his family. These moments meant everything to him.
David also had a special place in his heart for animals. Over the years, he lovingly cared for many rescue pets, giving each one a safe home and unconditional love.
His steady presence, thoughtful advice and unmistakable expressions will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
