TKACHENKO, Anna
Posted: August 15th, 2026 ANNA TKACHENKO 1925 ~ 2026 Anna Tkachenko, beloved wife of the late John Tkachenko, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 101, two days after her 101st birthday.
She was born in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, on August 7, 1925, to Josef and Melania Spizky, and was one of three children.
Anna married John on October 24, 1942, in Ukraine. Together, they had two boys while overseas. Following the Second World War, they lived in Belgium for four years before immigrating to Canada in 1950. They settled in Coaldale, where they farmed sugar beets. In 1958, they moved to Lethbridge, where they welcomed two daughters and remained for the rest of their lives.
Anna and John were founding members of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Holy Trinity, where Anna sang in the Ladies’ Choir. She loved gardening and took great pride in growing a huge garden filled with flowers. She also loved to bake and cook for her family. Varenyky, cabbage rolls, and shashlik were always prepared in abundance for everyone to enjoy.
Anna worked at Sears for 16 years and retired in 1989. After retiring, Anna travelled on numerous bus trips throughout the United States and Canada.
In 2015, after leaving their beloved home, Anna and John moved to Seasons Gardens, where Anna made many lifelong friends and was adored by everyone. In July 2017, she was displaced after a fire swept through the retirement home and remained displaced until December.
In 2026, Adaptacare became Anna’s new home. She was well cared for, and her stay there was brief. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care she received during her final days.
Anna leaves behind her children, John (Betty Ann), Natalie (Les Brooks), and Kathy Walter (Ron). She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Danielle (Dean), Johnny, Mike (Sheila), Blake, Sam (Riley Kubik), Taya, and Cole; and her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jada, Kennedy, Joel, and Shaun. She is also survived by her special friend, Genie Hartwich; Sam’s father, Grant McLean, who was a cherished part of the family; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John; her son, Nick, and his wife, Linda; her parents, Josef and Melania; and her sisters, Mary and Lydia.
Anna will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends for her warm heart, generous spirit, love of family, and the many wonderful memories she created throughout her long and beautiful life.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB.
A Funeral Service will he held at 11:00 AM, on Friday, August 21, 2026, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610-4 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, with Father Nazaree Kubyleniak officiating. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
