ADOLF ERDMANN November 22, 1938 ~ August 19, 2026
It is with sadness that Sherry and her children announce the passing of their beloved husband and father, Adolf. He passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the age of 87 years. Along with his loving wife, Sherry, Adolf’s memory will be cherished by his children, Anne deGraaf of Calgary, Lea (Daryl) Drysdale of Medicine Hat and Matthew Erdmann of Lethbridge; grandchildren, Luke, Emily and Evan Drysdale; brother, Erich Erdmann as well as numerous other extended family and friends. Adolf was born on November 22, 1938, in Tarutino, Bessarabia, Romania, to Olga and Albert Erdmann. In 1940, at a very young age, he left Romania with his family by train for Germany. The family settled in Grossachsen where Adolf attended school from 1946 until 1956. In 1956, Adolf began a new chapter in his life when he boarded the T.S.S. New York in Hanover, Germany. He arrived in Halifax on December 19, 1956, continuing his journey west by train, arriving in Medicine Hat on December 23, 1956. In February of 1957, he took his first job shoveling snow for the base at Suffield. Later that year, he began working for Canadian Pacific Railway on the Suffield branch line. He remained with CP Rail until 1965, working at various other locations during those years. In 1961, Adolf purchased a farm with his parents. He continued working on the farm until 1970, when he began a new career with Western Co-op. While working there, he continued to pursue his education, and in February of 1983, achieved his Second Class Power Engineering certification. He remained with Western Co-op until 1987, when the plant closed. In 1988, Adolf began working as a substitute teacher for Medicine Hat College in the Power Engineering Department. In 1989, he took on a part-time position teaching Power Engineering at the Kipling plant (Lab). Teaching became an important and rewarding part of his life, and he continued in this role until his retirement from the college in 2006. Adolf’s retirement did not mean slowing down. In 2007, he began working as a custodian for Seven Persons School, a position he enjoyed until 2011. In 2012, he followed his passion for art, taking on a position with Michaels as an art instructor in painting. He greatly enjoyed sharing his knowledge and creativity with others and continued teaching there until 2019. One of the most important chapters of Adolf’s life began on May 5, 1995, when, at five minutes after five, he married the love of his life, Sherry Link. Above all, Adolf will be remembered as a devoted husband and loving father as well as an inspiration to all those whose lives he touched through his many talents.
