1931 – THEODORE “TED” ALLAN FLEMMER – 2026
Theodore “Ted” Allan Flemmer of Medicine Hat, Alberta, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at the age of 94 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Alan (Cathy) and Robert (Carole) and will also be dearly missed by his eight grandchildren including David Flemmer (Rachelle) and Amanda Byron, as well as 11 great-grandchildren including Garet, Kavin, Ben, and Lily. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 74 years, Doreen, in March of 2026 and his son, Kevin, in 1978. Ted was born in the old Medicine Hat Hospital in 1931. He spent his early years in the community of Walsh, Alberta, where his family lived until moving to Medicine Hat in 1943. He attended Elm Street School for Grades 7 and 8, Redcliff School for Grade 9, and Alexandra Composite High School for Grades 10 through 12, graduating in 1950. Ted lived an extraordinarily full life, defined by family, friendship, service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to his community. His involvement with numerous organizations throughout Medicine Hat and beyond touched countless lives and earned him the respect and friendship of people from all walks of life. A dedicated Mason, Ted was a member of Mizpah Lodge No. 35, where he served two years as Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, serving in a number of distinguished positions, including Grand Secretary and Thrice Puissant Grand Master. In recognition of his service and dedication, Ted was coroneted an Honourary Inspector General of the 33rd Degree. His commitment to the Shriners was equally remarkable. Ted served as President of the Medicine Hat Shrine Club, as well as six years as Secretary and five years as Treasurer. He founded the Shrine Club newsletter as it became known within the organization. and was honoured as a Life Member of the Medicine Hat Shrine Club, Al Azhar Shriners, and Clown Unit. He also served as Commander of the Al Azhar Legion of Honour. For many years, he was a member and President of the Shriners Horse Patrol. Ted served on the Shrine Circus Committee for six years, including two years as Chair. In recognition of his many years of dedicated service, he was presented with a Life Membership in Al Azhar Shriners and honoured for his meritorious contributions to Al Azhar, the Shriners, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and his local community. His involvement extended to the Shrine Jesters and the Order of Quetzalcoatl (the Serpent God of Mexico), an organization supporting the philanthropic work of Shriners International and its children’s hospitals. One particularly memorable experience saw Ted consecrated to the degree of Master Artisan amid the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Mexico. Ted’s commitment to Medicine Hat extended far beyond his fraternal affiliations. In recognition of his outstanding community involvement and volunteer service, he was named Medicine Hat’s Citizen of the Year in 1994. For more than 25 years, Ted helped take seniors on the annual Cavalcade of Lights tour, bringing joy and companionship to many during the Christmas season. He was a founding member of the Heart & Stroke charitable golf tournament and served as its Chair for 17 years. His professional and community interests often overlapped. Ted was a Past President and longtime member of the Medicine Hat Motor Dealers Association and served as a Director of the provincial association. He also organized and chaired the Dealers Golf Tournament for 23 years. Ted was a longtime member and Director of the Cypress Club, where he served for several years as Entertainment Chair. He chaired the entertainment committee for the Club’s 90th anniversary celebration in 1983 and later served a two-year term as President. During his presidency, the Executive Committee began pursuing historical designation for the Club and undertook the restoration of the facility to reflect its original appearance using historic photographs. The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede was another organization especially close to Ted’s heart. As a Director and shareholder, he served as Chair of numerous committees, including the Grandstand Committee and Advertising and Promotion Committee, and also served as Vice-President. He was named a Life Director, served as Parade Marshal, and later continued his involvement as an advisor to the Parade Committee. In 2012, Ted chaired the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede’s 125th Anniversary Committee. He worked closely with municipal, provincial, and federal governments to secure funding and help make the milestone anniversary celebration a memorable success. Ted’s working career spanned more than 55 years and reflected the same energy and determination that characterized his volunteer life. His career included Park Garage, co-ownership of Parkside Motors, co-ownership of Jack Stephanson Pontiac Buick GMC, Fleet and Commercial Manager at Murray Chevrolet Cadillac, and later telephone sales positions with Commtel and Pro Comm Solutions. During his years with Jack Stephanson Pontiac Buick GMC, Ted held numerous positions, including Service Manager, General Manager of Parts and Service, General Manager, and ultimately Vice-President and co-owner. Under his leadership, the dealership became the first General Motors dealership in Canada to have all departments certified under the General Motors Qualification System required of GM dealers. Ted maintained his Journeyman status in Motor Vehicle Repair and as a Journeyman Partsman. He was also proud to be the 500th graduate of the General Motors University of Automotive Management program held at Simon Fraser University. As impressive as Ted’s professional accomplishments and community service were, they tell only part of his story. At the centre of Ted’s life was his family and, most especially, Doreen, his wife and companion for more than seven decades. Together, Ted and Doreen enjoyed many years of travelling, including countless memorable trips to Las Vegas and destinations throughout North America. They were also longtime members of the Connaught Golf Club, where they could often be found enjoying two or three rounds of golf each week. Whether travelling, golfing, attending community events, or simply spending time together, Ted and Doreen shared a lifetime of experiences and memories. Doreen once described Ted as “a man who lived his life with gusto,” and few words could describe him more appropriately. As a husband, Ted will be remembered for his generosity, devotion, and kind nature. As a father, he will be remembered for his leadership and guidance. To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he will be remembered for his stories, his jokes, his sense of fun, and the unmistakable personality that made time spent with Grandpa memorable. To say that Ted had a larger-than-life presence would be an understatement. He embraced life wholeheartedly. He believed in contributing, participating, helping others, and making his community better simply because he had been part of it.

Ted truly lived.
He lived as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He lived as a businessman, volunteer, leader, mentor, Mason, Shriner, and friend. Above all, he lived with a desire to serve his community and to do whatever good he could for his fellow man. The principles of Friendship, Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth were not merely words to Ted; they were qualities woven into his character and reflected throughout his daily life.
His accomplishments were many, but his greatest legacy will be found in the people whose lives he touched, the organizations he strengthened, the community he served, and the family he loved so dearly. Ted leaves behind an extraordinary lifetime of stories, friendships, laughter, service, and memories. A Celebration of Ted and Doreen’s lives will take place at a later date.
