BERZE HELEN BERZE, passed away peacefully at Buffalo Grace Manor in Lethbridge on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the ripe old age of 99.
She is survived by her sons, Alan of Dundas, Ontario, and Ken of Calgary, Alberta, as well as three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2001.
Helen was born in Tiszanana, Hungary. As was common in the 1920s, her father immigrated to Canada in search of a better life for his family. Helen and her mother followed a couple of years later, settling in southern Alberta.
She married John in the Crowsnest Pass, where they lived for several years before moving to Lethbridge in the mid-1950s. Lethbridge would remain her home for the rest of her life.
Helen was larger than life and made many close friends throughout her lifetime. She loved gardening and generously shared the vegetables she grew with friends throughout the summer and fall. She was very active with the Hungarian Old Timers Club and spent many years in the kitchen preparing meals for its various dinners and events. She was also active with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization. She valued her community, her friendships and her family.
When Helen decided she could no longer live on her own, she transitioned through a couple of retirement homes before eventually making her home at Buffalo Grace Manor.
The family extends its sincere thanks to the Alberta Home Care staff, the health care aides at Buffalo Grace Manor, and Dr. Orr and Dr. Stewart, who cared for Helen and helped keep her well throughout her long life.
A very special thank you goes to the two Karens, Karen Mahar and Karen Ostrup, who provided Helen with the kind of care and love that could only be given to family.
Helen lived a long and full life and will be deeply missed by her family and the many friends she made along the way.
A Come and Go Celebration of life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME, 2825 – 32 Street South, Lethbridge, AB, on Saturday, September 26, 2026 from 12:30 P.M. to 2:30 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
