MARY ANN FLUG 1943 ~ 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ann Flug, beloved wife of the late Brian “Gary” Flug, on September 23, 2026, at the age of 83 years.
Mary Ann was born in Leader, Saskatchewan to Anton and Veronica Weigel. The family later moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Mary Ann met and fell in love with Gary, and they married on November 9, 1963. Mary Ann and Gary were together for a long marriage of 52 years prior to his passing on November 14, 2015. They moved to Calgary with their young son, Darren, and while they were there, they also welcomed Kellie Rae. From Calgary they moved on to farms in Northern Alberta. Mary Ann showed her will and strong, hard-working nature, taking up driving tractor on the farms, tending to the land and caring for the many animals. They hosted many a family member on these farms, often bordering them for a time. Their home was welcoming and their door open. Mary Ann and Gary later returned to Medicine Hat to be closer to family and back to the place they truly called home. Mary Ann was a successful banker with the majority of her working years spent with TD Canada Trust until her retirement.
Mary Ann was a wife, sister, mother, a farmer, a banker and in later years, she volunteered and assisted Gary and Darren with their new passion in Sunshine Corner, an ornamental concrete business. Mary Ann was a member of the CWL, strong in her Roman Catholic faith. Mary Ann had many hobbies and interests. She was a member of the Genealogy Society and went on to write two books on the subject. She loved gardening flowers and vegetables but really any plant at all interested her. While tending to her yard, she enjoyed the air, the sun and all of the birds for which she seemed to know every species. She loved music and for many years went travelling with Gary, camping and attending jamborees. Where there is music there is often dancing and she would always seek out a dancing partner and loved to dress up and go out. In the last few years, she spent several hours a week line dancing with a very special group of ladies. She loved to enjoy food and wine with friends and family and was often up for a game of cards after or just to hang out with a good movie, as long as she was with you. And by “with you”, we come to her true gifts and achievements: Mary Ann’s attention was always on the matter, and the person at hand. She was constant in her sharing, caring and loving. Intuitive and thoughtful, she always had an ear to listen and a response to correspond that came from a very wise soul. She did not have one moment for negativity and focused solely on what interesting adventure could come next. She thought of others at all times while tending to her own garden as well. She would collect trinkets, toys and beautiful things. These items later became full on collections that she shared with any kid, big or small. To name just a few: Lego, Marbles, Barbie, Transformers, Puzzles, Antiques. Price tag on these items – Priceless. She shared them with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours. Up until she left for St Joseph’s Home, she had a project going whereby she was fixing solar lights from her garden so that someone could come along and enjoy them. And we will. She touched us all with her unwavering spirit. Mary Ann was a unique and beautiful flower, and she was a gift to us all.
Mary Ann is survived by her daughter, Kellie Rae Mallette and her husband, Alexandre K Saint Juste; her three grandsons, Noravicc K Saint Juste, Alex Sandler K Saint Juste and Dallas Flug and his sons, Roman and Dominic; her granddaughter, Schantel (Chris) Hochheimer and their daughter, Hazel; her sisters, Debbie Podesta and Irene (Larry) Todd; her sister-in-law, Merc Weigel; her brother, James (Cheryl) Weigel; numerous nieces and nephews that she treasured, and many special friends.
Along with her husband, Gary, Mary Ann was also predeceased by her son, Darren Gary (Michelle) Flug; her sisters, Katherine Weigel and Josephine (John) Getz; her brother Peter Weigel and her brother-in-law, Gary Podesta.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Debbie Podesta, Ron and Ellen Baba, and Norman and Pat Wittevrongel. You were there for her standing steady in support for her final challenging chapter as you were for her entire life. Also, to all of the care team at St Joseph’s Home Carmel Hospice – Angels down here on the ground.
Family and friends will gather for prayers led by Deacon Robert Risling in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the HOLY FAMILY PARISH on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Fernando Genogaling celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery.
