DELMER HARMON 1925 ~ 2026 Delmer (Del) Harmon passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society Park Meadows Village on September 25, 2026, at the age of 101 years.
Del is predeceased by his loving wife Helen (2017); also, his brother Jack (Dorothy is deceased) and his niece Mary Ellen (Kalispell, Montana).
Del is survived by his daughter Linda (Edmonton) and son Gary (Marlene) of Lethbridge, as well as multiple generation family members.
In the early 1900s, Del’s mother Ethel came to Lethbridge as a child with her family from Liverpool, England. Likewise, Del’s father John (Jack) came to Lethbridge as a child with his family from North Dakota, U.S.A., in the early 1900’s. In Lethbridge, Ethel and Jack married, and Del was born July 5, 1925. Seven years later Del’s brother was born. His parents worked on sheep farms and other farms around Lethbridge while Del attended Coaldale Elementary School. In the 1930s, while living in the country during his childhood, Del developed a love for the outdoors and nature.
Eventually Del’s family moved to an acreage in Lethbridge (located at the present site of the Movie Mill). Thus, continuing his education in Lethbridge. In his youth Del gained mechanical experience repairing his second-hand bike while delivering newspapers.
During the difficult years of the Second World War, Del left Lethbridge Collegiate Institute at age 17. His attention to detail and craftsmanship helped him secure a job repairing watches at a local jewelry store. Hoping to serve as a heavy-duty mechanic on fighter aircraft, he enlisted in the air force but was rejected because of his flat feet, which at the time were believed to prevent prolonged marching. During the final years of the war, Del contributed to the war effort by working at a sawmill.
Shortly after World War II ended, Del met Helen. They fell in love and were married on March 18, 1949. Del and Helen had their 68th wedding anniversary March 18, 2017. In the 1950s, daughter Linda and son Gary were born. For 37 years, from March 1953 to January 1991, Del was employed with the City of Lethbridge Transit System as a city bus heavy-duty mechanic.
Del’s lifelong love of the outdoors included family camping trips, hiking, fishing, boating, travel, and building his own wooden motorboat.
As a mechanic, he had extensive knowledge of vintage and modern vehicles, particularly Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep, and Ram trucks. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR racing and motorcycles. Del and his family attended many car shows in Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer, Montana, and Washington.
Although country and western music was his favorite, Del also enjoyed other genres.
Hockey was Del’s favorite sport. In the 1930s, he listened to games on the radio with his father. As a young goaltender on outdoor rinks, he fashioned shin pads from magazines and elastic bands. He later watched the Original Six NHL teams on the family’s black-and-white television. From the Calgary Flames’ first day in the NHL, Del proudly considered himself their number one fan, a devotion that continued throughout his 101 years.
Del spent all 101 years of his life in Lethbridge. He was proud to call the city home – the place where he was born, raised, educated, married, built a career, and raised his family.
