Phyllis Smathers
1945 – 2026
It is with deep love and sadness that the family of Phyllis Aileen Smathers, announce her passing in Taber on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at the age of 81 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend whose warmth and spirited sense of humour touched so many lives.
Born on July 29, 1945, in Gimli, Manitoba, Phyllis was a true spitfire. Always ready with a smile, a little mischief, and a witty remark to make you laugh, she brought joy wherever she went. She had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed one.
Family was at the centre of Phyllis’s life. With her husband Vern, Phyllis spent many summers camping and boating with their family. After devoting her early years to raising children, she returned to school to become a nurse, bringing her caring nature and humour to her work until her retirement in 2015. Phyllis also found immense joy in cooking and baking for her loved ones, maintaining her impressive garden, creating stained glass and photoshopping friends and family into custom works of art.
Phyllis will be lovingly remembered by her children Kelly (Paul) Elser, Darrin (Yvonne) Smathers and Joy (Terry) Smathers; grandchildren Alana, Larissa (Edge), Jessica (Martin), Tarin (Will), Ryley (Susie), Alexa, Mackayla, Logan, and Kaelynn;  great grandchildren Seth, Lesedi, and Stephen; and her brother Calvin Biem.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Vern Smathers; parents Joy and Lorrene Biem.
Her family will carry forward the laughter, love, and wonderful memories she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed.
A private columbarium committal will be held at the Taber Memorial Garden.
