It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, Katherine “Kay” Surina.
After a lengthy period of declining health, she passed away on October 24th, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice. That was where she wanted to be in the end. With the loving, kind nurses she had known and the exceptional care they provided.
Katherine is survived by her daughter, Debbie; son-in-law, Lyle; grandson, Koby Eskestrand.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arnie; daughter, Betty Lee; grandson, Connor.
Katherine was born August 4th, 1940, in Swift Current, SK to parents, Abe and Margaret Friesen. She was their fourth child and was blessed with six brothers, John (Loretta) Friesen, Abe Friesen, William (Mary) Friesen, Jake (Anne) Friesen, Henry (Tina) Friesen, Benny Friesen; three sisters, Betty (Ben) Goertzen, Marge (Dave) Martens, Lena (George) Goertzen. She was very fortunate to have a large family to love and enjoy.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sisters, Betty, Marge, Lena (George); brother, William; sisters-in-law, Loretta and Anne; brother-in-law, Jim (Ethel) Surina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
At a young age, Katherine moved to Edmonton to complete the LPN course and training. Following that, she worked at St. Theresa Hospital in Fort Vermilion, AB and Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
She married Arnie Surina in 1961 and lived in Hilda, AB. They were blessed with twin daughters that kept them entertained and filled their hearts with joy.
Kay loved growing flowers and enjoyed gardening. She baked, cooked, canned, took care of her family and anyone else in need. She loved music, singing, reading, games, sketching, watching and discussing the news. Over the years she studied interior decorating, was involved in bible study, prayer groups and other volunteer work. She loved watching her grandson play volleyball and baseball. She truly enjoyed time spent with family and friends.
A special thank you to Dr. J. Bratvold, community paramedics, hospital nursing staff and physicians, palliative care, Haven and St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice. We dearly appreciate the kindness, excellent care and support given to Kay and our family.
She will be remembered for her kindness, faith, generosity, and caring heart.
