1924 ~ HAWTHORNE ~ 2013

Mr. James “Jim” Lawrence Hawthorne, beloved husband of Mrs. Nora Hawthorne of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, June 13th, 2013 at the age of 89 years. Jim also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Cindy (Randy) Koch, Stephen (Glenda) Hawthorne and Kevin (Cathy) Hawthorne; six grandchildren, Jillian (Ty) Bach, Lauren Koch, Erica Koch, Jenifer Hawthorne, Shannon Hawthorne and Liam Hawthorne; two great- grandchildren, Dane and Bennett Bach; one brother, Frank (Ruth) Hawthorne; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his parents, George and Hazel Hawthorne; one grandson, Benjamin Koch; and five brothers, Roland, Victor, Harvey, Robert and Gordon. Jim was born in Rocanville, Saskatchewan on April 28th, 1924 and was raised in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. He served his country in WWII with the South Alberta Regiment from January 12th, 1942 until being discharged on July 25th, 1946. Jim’s two older brothers, Harvey & Robert also served and he wanted to serve with them. They all safely returned home from active service in Europe; where Jim served in England, Holland, France, Belgium and Germany. Jim met Nora Misner in Cabri, Saskatchewan and they were married in Swift Current, Saskatchewan on December 8th, 1949. In the spring of 1950 Jim began working at Defense Research Establishment Suffield and he worked there until his retirement in 1980. Jim was a great volunteer. He was a scout leader and was very involved at Westminster United Church as well as the church camp at Elkwater. Jim was quick to assist anyone who asked for help and acted on many boards and committees. Family and friends were Jim’s first priority. He loved to sit with his friends and ‘shoot the bull’. Old war stories and politics were often the subject of conversation. The last years of Jim’s life were spent at Chinook Village where he was known and loved by all. He will be sorely missed. The Funeral Service will be held in CHINOOK VILLAGE, Terrace Room, 2801 – 13th Avenue SE, on Monday, June 17th, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Steve Pahl officiating. A private family interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery.
