LOW Robert

Posted: March 30th, 2013

ROBERT DOUGLAS LOW, beloved husband of the late Zelma Dahl Low, passed away peacefully in Cardston on March 24, 2013 at the age of 88 years.
Bob was born in Cardston, Alberta on October 17, 1924 to Joseph Smith Low and Margaret Newton (a surprise twin birth). He was raised with his 2 brothers and 2 sisters in a small brick home on 6th Street West in Cardston. His father instilled in him the value of hard work. He chopped wood, hauled coal, and milked cows. When his father Joe acquired some land, Bob said he obtained his doctor’s degree in “rock picking” and “fence fixing”.
Bob attended the University of Alberta and received his civil engineering degree. In 1944, he joined the army and attended Officer’s training in Ontario. When the war ended, he and twin brother Dick served an LDS mission in New Zealand. He truly learned to love the Maori people, their language and their culture.
Following his mission, he began working in the Ford dealership in Cardston, where he remained until retirement. Bob had a wonderful singing voice, and sang lead for the “Temple City Four” quartet, performing at many functions throughout Alberta. He was an active member of the Cardston Rotary Club, serving as president in 1967. He loved hunting, travelling, climbing Old Chief Mountain, x-country skiing, and biking.
In 1953, he married Zelma Dahl in what he later referred to as “the best inspired decision I ever made”. Together they raised 6 children. He served faithfully in the LDS church as a bishop, scouter, and stake presidency counsellor. Bob and Zelma served missions together in Washington D.C, and New Zealand; and later served many years together in the temple.
He is survived by his 6 children; JoAnne (Bart) Milner of Edmonton, Brian (Cynthia) Low of Cardston, Shirley (Will) Burtenshaw of Edmonton, Ron (Tammy) Low of Magrath, Margie (Darren) Remington of Seattle, WA, Jim (Janelle) Low of Cedar Hills, UT; 29 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Richard (Elaine) Low of Cardston, Helen (Ed) Usevitch of Huntington Beach, CA, and John (Coleen) Low of Calgary. He was predeceased by his loving wife Zelma (13 days earlier), sister Beth Stubbs, and granddaughter Madison Remington.
The Funeral Service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Cardston Alberta West Stake Center (Waterton Hi-way), Cardston, Alberta on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
Friends may meet the family at the Church from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the Service. Interment in the Cardston Cemetery.
