MR. JEROME “JERRY” ELDER, beloved husband of Mrs. Valerie Elder, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital, surrounded and held by his loving family on Tuesday, August 13th, 2013 at the age of 73 years. He is survived by his wife Valerie, children Kevin (Darilyn — Adam and Haley, Chad, Drew, Jennie, Maggie, Eva and Marc), Craig (Twila), Kyle (Natasha, Jordan, Hanna, JT), and Michelle (Gary — Brittany, Courtney). He is also survived by his brothers and sisters — Phillip (Donna) Elder of Claresholm, Jean Elder of St. Albert, Edith Elder of Whitehorse, Phyllis Nykiforuk of Saskatoon, Jim (Loris) Elder of Raymond, Diane (Otto) Miedema of Coaldale, Donna (Bill) Gibb of Calgary, Doug (Beckie) Elder of Calgary, special friends Wayne and Lorna Erickson as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents Lena and Louis Elder and In-laws Bernice and Carl Kangas. His love of life and people, his gentle manner, his always present smile and laugh, his positive attitude and courage no matter what struggle he faced touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was lovingly referred to as "the energizer bunny", "crash" or simply "hero" by his family. He worked as the Branch Manager of a Wholesale Paper Company in Lethbridge for 37 years before his health problems forced him into an early retirement. Jerry and Val were married on April 25, 1964. Their lives together were a true definition of compassion and love and an inspiration to his children, family and friends. His favorite times were any time when his family was together such as camping or playing cards and games. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and a lifelong fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also loved sitting in his backyard with his morning mocha and a word puzzle and watching his blue jays coming for their daily peanuts. The family would like to acknowledge and thank those who helped Dad deal with his lifelong health problems – Dr. Haberman, Dr. Janzen, Tara from the Heart Function Clinic and Carmen from the Pacemaker Clinic. Words can never express how grateful we are for your help in letting us have Dad in our lives as long as we did. A Prayer Vigil will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at ST. BASIL’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 604 13th Street North, Lethbridge, Alberta, on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. with Father Nathan Siray celebrant. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation – 100-119, 14 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 1Z6
