WISNIEWSKI Velta

Posted: January 24th, 2014

VELTA WISNIEWSKI passed away at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the age of 80 years. She is the loving mother of Nora (Terry) Decosemo of Sherwood Park. Velta is also survived by sisters: Elvira Felkers (Toronto), Dzidra Azzara (Prince George); step-daughters: Rose Gray (Lethbridge), Marlene Wisniewski (Lethbridge), and Lady, her silky terrier. Velta is predeceased by her parents Ernest and Austra Kimeralis; brother Dzintar Kimeralis; husband Peteris Argals; husband Stefan Wisniewski; brothers-in-law Karlis Felkers and Arnold Azzara, and granddaughter Carrie-Lynn O’Donnell. Mom was born in Latvia in 1933. Her early years were spent on the farm there. As Latvia lost its independence, they left Latvia and headed to Germany. After spending time at a camp for displaced persons, they eventually were lucky enough to come to Canada in 1951. Their early years in Canada were spent in Southern Alberta and the Warnock family farm. Her family soon moved to Lethbridge. One of Velta’s first jobs was at Catelli’s. Velta married Peteris Argals in 1960 – her daughter, Nora, was born after that. Soon after this she became a single parent and started work at Ellison Milling, later to become Parrish and Heimbecker. Velta worked there for many, many years, and was eventually to retire from there. Velta met a dashing man, Stefan Wisniewski, whom she married in the 80’s. Steve and Velta spent many wonderful years together. They enjoyed camping and fishing (especially their trips to Duck Lake), and belonged to many clubs in Lethbridge, among them, the Army and Navy, the Elks, the Miners Library, and the Legion. They could often be found socializing and dancing there. Ill health struck Steve, and Mom lost him in 2006. In recent years, she enjoyed pursuing hobbies such as reading, jigsaw puzzles, and was just learning to master some “new” technology with her IPAD. Mom loved to socialize, loved to laugh and visit and share a good joke. Besides her family, she enjoyed close friendships and had support from neighbors and friends. She was especially close with the Tschetter family, and valued her close friendship with Sharyl. Our time here is short, and hindsight is 20-20. We will always love Mom and will miss her. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge, with Rev. Aldeen McKay officiating.
