1921 – 2014
It’s with sadness that we announce the quiet passing of our aunt Katherine (Kate) Orr Dow, at St. Michael’s Health Centre on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the age of 93 years. Kate won born on June 30, 1921 in Hardieville, the daughter of James and Jane Orr Dow and the youngest of 10 siblings. In 1922 the family moved to a farm in the Crystal Lake District (Sunnyside) where they established a long standing (50 years) dairy operation along 43 St. N.. Kate attended grades one thru eleven at the original Crystal Lake School and she loved music studying piano under the direction of Mrs. Oscar Willetts. Kate lived on the family farm her whole life, with the exception that for the last few years she has been a resident in various health facilities specifically designed for seniors. Kate was predeceased by her parents: James and Jane Orr Dow, 3 sisters — Annie, Jeannie (Jean) Grieve, Janet McKenzie, and 5 brothers — Alexander, Robert (Bob), James (Jimmy), David (Spud), and Thomas (Tom). She is survived by her sister Elizabeth (Liz) Pavan. Kate never married and although she had no children of her own, she always had a special place in her heart for her many nieces and nephews. Lovingly remembered by her primary caregiver’s nephew Tracy Dow and niece Linda McKenzie. She will be missed but the wonderful memories will be cherished forever. It was Kate’s wishes that there be no formal funeral service. Following cremation, Kate will be laid to rest with her brother Thomas Orr Dow in Mountain View Cemetery. Katherine’s family is extremely grateful and extend a sincere thank-you to the Doctors, Nurses, and the many caregivers for the excellent and compassionate care shown to Kate.
