GILLETT Roger

Posted: January 7th, 2015

ROGER MALCOLM GILLETT, beloved husband of Florence Gillett, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the age of 81 years after a long and wonderfully successful life. Roger is survived by his wife Florence – together for 60 years, their five children, Michael (Andree), Bruce (Sharon), Donna (Don), Pam (Brian), Susan (Tim), ten grandchildren (Kadi, Alli, Quinn, Jennifer, Sarah, Jodi, Jessica, Jacob, Eve, PJ), and four great grandchildren (Cole, Dylan, Reid, Olivia). Roger was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. He worked as a carpenter, construction superintendent and eventually co-owned Gillett Construction with his brother Joe. Roger finished his career working with his son Bruce running RBG construction. Roger married Florrie in 1954 in Lethbridge and together they lived in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Prince George and back to Lethbridge in 1967 where they settled to finish raising their family. Roger was very proud of his family and took great joy in watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow. Roger had a very strong work ethic and was very generous with his time and property, both evident in the Whitefish cabin that he and Florrie built back in 1987. Nothing gave him more joy than to know his cabin and backyard pool were being enjoyed by his family and friends… unless it was hitting an eagle or hole-in-one. Roger’s third home was Henderson Lake Golf Course where he shared his passion for golf with everyone. He and Florrie enjoyed time together golfing in their retirement years. Roger nurtured a questionable sense of humor. He was forever repeating shaggy dog stories, and today we only have to repeat the punch line to generate a laugh. No party was complete without him getting everyone to play "I see a bar? Over thar?" which would end up with party-goers laying on the floor. His smile, his generosity, his handy hands and his friendship will be missed. A Celebration of his life will be held at CORNERSTONE FUNERAL HOME – 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. with Glenda Wert officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Children’s Hospital – 1820 Richmond Road SW, Calgary, Alberta, T2T 5T7. Interment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
