APPLEBY Leon

1935 – 2015
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. Smokey was born in Regina, Sask and raised in Victoria, B.C. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served honourably for 25 years in Greenwood, Summerside, Germany, Cold Lake and Comox. He held the rank of Sergeant. Upon his retirement, the family moved to Calgary, where he took up plumbing and gas fitting and is a member of Local 496 Calgary Plumbers and Fitters Union. In 1993 Smokey and Elaine purchased acreage in the MD of Pincher Creek. He loved to camp, fish,hunt and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a member of the Escapees, Pincher Mountaineers and a lifetime member of the Good Sam Club. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Elaine; son, Peter; daughter, Selina (Dan) Priebe; grandsons, Lance and Lukas Priebe; sister, Barbara (Keith); uncle, Brian (Maxine); and numerous nieces and nephews. Smokey was predeceased by his parents Geoffrey and Nellie; brother, Jim and sister, Wyneja. A celebration of Smokey’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Calgary Centennial Branch 285 (9202 Horton Road SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 11 am. Memorial donations in Smokey’s name may be made directly to the Windy Slopes Health Foundation (P.O. Box 2554, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0), or the Bobby Burns Fish Park c/o Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 (P.O. Box 131, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0).

    Dear Elaine, Peter & Selina – I am sorry to be contacting you so late with my condolences. Bob sent me an email but unfortunately the email address he had was wrong. I was aware of Leon’s passing and you were all in my thoughts daily. My thoughts are with you all now and I hope that as each day passes your sorrow lifts a little. I’m certain you all have wonderful memories of your time together with each other. Take care good care of each other and your families..
