1925 – 2015
Mrs. Anna Ponomar, Beloved wife of the late Serhi (George) Ponomar passed away peacefully on June 4, 2015 at the age of 90.
Mom was born to Vira and Pantelei Haiduk on May 28, 1925 in Novy Selo, Ukraine. She married dad in 1944 just before leaving the Ukraine with her new husband and his family, making their way to start a new life in Canada.
After settling in Magrath in 1949 with their baby Nick, mom and dad were blessed with three more children, Paul, Eugene and Lora.
For many years while dad was away trucking, mom struggled to keep the family fed, clothed and nurtured. Planting, harvesting, cooking and canning produce from their huge garden and keeping a few animals, kept mom incredibly busy from early morning until night during those years. Although times were hard, mom and dad brought traditions from Ukraine with them, often sharing days filled with joy, food and friendship.
As times got better they travelled frequently to Hawaii where they enjoyed great times with family and friends, both new and old.
After dad passed away in 1991, mom kept her family close and took great pride and joy in cooking wonderful meals. She loved the coming of spring and her vegetable garden, rose beds and flowers thrived.
Through the years, mom loved singing in the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Choir and bowling with her family and friends. Although her last few years were a challenge, mom never gave up trying.
Mom is lovingly remembered by her sons Paul, Eugene (Kathryn) and daughter-in-law Irene (Nick, deceased) along with her beloved granddaughter Jamie and many family members both in Canada and Ukraine.
Predeceasing mom were her husband George (1991), daughter Lora (2005) and oldest son Nick (2010).
