EVELYN “JULIANNA” WEASEL MOCCASIN (DAY CHIEF) Yellow Owl Woman passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Friday, August 21, 2015 at the age of 62 years.

Julianna leaves to mourn her children, Susan (Lynn) Weasel Moccasin, Stacey (Lyle) Toews, Vicki (Randolph), Trudy (Mark), Tyler (Candace), Ryan (Nicole), Eric (Cynthia), and adopted children, Margaret Day Chief, Emily Delaney, Tammy (Rudy) Weasel Moccasin and Godfrey Shouting. Julianna was blessed with 12 granddaughters, 9 grandsons and 6 great- grandchildren, Godchildren, Wylie Weasel Moccasin and Donovan Blood. She was predeceased by her husband, Jarvie Day Chief; special daughter, Jolene Shouting; and her granddaughter, Amanda Joy Weasel Moccasin.

Julianna was born and raised on the Blood Indian Reserve. She received her education at the St. Paul’s Anglican Residential School. She met her husband, Jarvie Day Chief in 1970 and raised their family in the Old Agency community. Julianna was employed with Kainai Arts & Crafts, Blood Tribe Recreation & Parks as the Old Agency Program Coordinator before she started her small business. Julianna’s devotion and love of children was shown by opening her home to children in need of a loving home.

Julianna took the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour and was baptised in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost on June 12, 1988 according to John Chapter 3 and Mathew 24:19. Julianna’s dedication and devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ was epitomized by the way she led her life and the teachings she has left her children. We are secure in our faith that we will see our mother again in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Julianna was the owner and operator of Yellow Owl Gifts and was in operation for over 20 years. She learned her beading skills from her mother, Ada Weasel Moccasin in the 1960’s and perfection from her father, Dan Weasel Moccasin Sr. Julianna started her small business at Chief Shot Both Sides mall in the late 1980s with the support of her family. She attended Trade Shows, local aboriginal celebrations and consigned her beadwork to local gift shops. Her business name was inspired by her Blackfoot name Yellow Owl Woman, which was given to her by late grandpa Emil Wings Sr. Julianna received the Business of the Year Award in 2005 by the Kainai Chamber of Commerce and most recent 2014 Certificate of Recognition Award by the First Nation Entrepreneurial Symposium. The family would like to take this time to thank family, friends, and the community for their support of the Yellow Owl Gift Shop throughout the years.
