Maria “Mary” Pietraszko

1921 – 2018

Mary Pietraszko (Maria) passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the age of 96 years.

Mary was born in Poland on November 24, 1921. She worked in Germany during WWII as forced labor. She married Andy in 1945 and the family immigrated to Canada in 1951. After working in the sugar beet fields for several years, Mary got a job cooking at St. Michael’s Hospital and worked there for twenty-six years before retiring. Mary loved bus tours and with Andy travelled throughout most of Canada and the United States. A highlight of their many travels was their trip to Hawaii and Australia. Mary loved reading, swimming and walking and she was nicknamed the “roadrunner” by her friends at the lodge. Mary made the best overnight buns, spudnuts and spareribs. Garlic and onions were always a staple ingredient in her dishes.

Mary is lovingly remembered by her family: daughter, Sophie (John) Vucurevich, their sons, Darren (Kim), Wayne (Liz) and granddaughter Nena, Jeffrey (Allison) and grandsons Brae and Tavish, Kevin (Tara) and granddaughters, Mila and Nikki, all of Lethbridge; daughter, Lucy (Peter) Redeker and their sons, Jason and Quinn (Leslie) and grandsons, Rome and Olly of Calgary. Mary is also survived by nieces and nephews and their families in Winnipeg, Manitoba and in Poland.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Andy (Andrzej) in 1993, her parents, three brothers and two sisters in Poland.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, January 19, 2018 at OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2405 – 12th Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Father Kevin Tumback officiating.
