MACKAY
MARGARET (PEGGY) JOYCE MACKAY (ZINCK) passed away peacefully on January 21, 2017 at Chinook Regional Hospital following a stroke. She was 88 years old.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of sixty years, Donald C. MacKay, her twin brother Bob, sisters Mary Louise and Elizabeth, and her parents Sydney and Mary Zinck. She is survived by son Bruce (Flora) and daughter Gillian and her granddaughters Elizabeth (François) and Maggie.
Peggy was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, and kept those Maritime roots strong throughout her life with yearly trips back East to visit dear old friends and family. After moving to Lethbridge in 1967, she and Don were active members of McKillop United Church where they made many life-long friends. She was a leader of the CGIT and served the church in a number of capacities. A graduate of Mount Allison University, Peggy remained a life-long learner and an avid reader. She enjoyed playing Bridge and was hard to beat at Scrabble. She worked as a library assistant at Lakeview School and volunteered in the Lethbridge Public Library Read-On program. After retirement, Peggy and Don travelled widely, taking trips to Europe, South America, the U.S.A., as well as their yearly pilgrimages to the Maritime provinces. Peggy loved music, was a long-time supporter of the Lethbridge Symphony and played saxophone in the Community Band for a number of years. She encouraged and supported the developing musical interests of her children and loved playing the family piano until she no longer could. She struggled with dementia in her later years but never lost her gracious charm and wit.
The MacKay family would like to thank the staff of Good Samaritan Park Meadows Village for the excellent support and care Peggy received in the past year.
A Funeral Service celebrating Peggy’s life will be held at the MCKILLOP UNITED CHURCH, 2329 – 15th Avenue South, Lethbridge, on Friday, January 27th, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., with Reverend Trevor Potter officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Lethbridge Association for Community Living 527 6 St S, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2E1 – Ph. 403-327-2911.
