  3. Kathleen Hagan (Braiding the Sweetgrass) says:

    Dear Lucy and family,

On behalf of the management at Hull Services and the team at Braiding the Sweetgrass, I offer prayers as you send Camille’s spirit home to the Creator. As we did when he was living among us, we want to acknowledge and honour Camille’s contribution to the development of our program for urban Indigenous families, working through the impacts of historic trauma. Camille brought his own experience to table, so willing to share his knowledge and gifts when we were building the foundation of the Braiding the Sweetgrass program. Camille shared our vision for reconnecting families to traditional ways, cultural teaching and most importantly the Elders as way to heal. He demonstrated such respect for the other Elders in the team and their ways and customs. He always seemed to enjoy listening to the other Elders during our Storytelling gatherings and at our feasts & celebrations. He had a great laugh and I personally enjoyed the teasing and laughter he so freely tossed out. He modeled a commitment for staff and families, pointing out the spiritual path to grow beyond the circumstances handed to them.

He was so encouraging to us in the early days of the program. Even after driving two hours into Calgary and finding only 2 or 3 families turn out for a group, he remained steadfast in his vision and commitment to the work. I remember his words, “Everyone is here who is supposed to be here today. Keep going. You are on the right path, and doing the right things. Keep going.”

We remember his words and we keep going. We remember his wisdom and his contributions and are grateful to have learned from him. We remember his smile and his wonderful sense of humour and feel blessed to have laughed with him. We will continue to acknowledge his contributions to our program and to us personally. It was an honour to know and work with him.

    With respect, gratitude and sincerity,

Kathleen Hagan and the team at Hull Services and Braiding the Sweetgrass
