CHANDA

1933 – 2020

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of LeRoy Alexander Chanda on Monday, August 10th, 2020.

Roy is survived by his wife Anne of 58 years, daughters LeeAnne (Dean) Jetten & grandsons Taylor (Tasya) & Braydon, Lynette (Geoff) Snider, and son Roy Jr. (Kae) and grandson Austin. Roy is also survived by his sister & niece Jean & Barb Coninx (deceased brother-in-law Pete and nephew Robert), inlaws Eileen & Bob Ferguson, nieces Shannon Bissanti & family, Janice Hepfner & family (deceased nephew Jeff Ferguson).

Roy was born & raised in Raymond, Alberta. At the age of 15, he had to quit school as his father passed away. He became involved with the family farm, caring for his mother, sister and nephew.

As a young man, Roy started his career with Jubilee Motors and later became a salesman at Acklands. He traveled the roads & drove many hours making many friends & acquaintances. Roy then purchased Parkside Grocery Store. This store made him very happy and it soon became the hub of the neighbourhood. Roy enjoyed visiting & socializing with everyone who walked through the front door. His customers became a second family to him.

Roy loved all sports & participated in curling, bowling, golfing and fastball. Fastball became one of his favorite sports. He was a very good pitcher and had a mean delivery of the ball. He was a member of the Hamilton Floors Bowling Team. Roy received many trophies for his high bowling scores. Golf was another sport Roy enjoyed. With his teammates, he was a member of the Raymond and Indian Hills golf courses. In 2003 at the Raymond Golf Course Roy got a hole in one. He was very proud of himself and we, his family, were also proud of this accomplishment. A lifelong hobby of Roy was his coin collection.

Roy met Anne at a Hi-Fi singles club. Anne was attracted to Roy’s fancy feet on the dance floor. They dated for two years, married in 1962, and then started a family.

Roy & Anne loved to travel and their journeys took them to places all over Canada & the United States. Later they purchased property at Meadow Lake in Columbia Falls, Montana. The family enjoyed many holiday times in Meadow Lake as Roy always looked forward to a great game of golf, barbecuing, playing board games and relaxing on the deck with a cold drink in his hand.

Roy was proud of his three children LeeAnne, Lynette and Roy Jr., he introduced them to the sports he loved and was always involved with all practices, games and tournaments.

Roy was blessed with three grandsons, Taylor, Braydon and Austin. Papa took patience and time with Taylor & Braydon and shared his passion for golf with them. Papa loved to watch his grandsons sports and he enjoyed his morning video chats with Austin from Thailand.

Roy loved to lend a helping hand to those in need. He volunteered for 30 years with the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen and then 10 years with the Lethbridge Food Bank. Roy was an active member of the Catholic Church and had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He joined the Rosary Guild Group and thousands of his rosaries have been distributed all over the world to Catholic churches, the Catholic School System and students at LeeAnne’s school.

Thank you to Roy’s neighbors who live in a close-knit cul-de-sac neighborhood. We thank you for your visits and concerns that you have shown towards Roy and his family. Thank you to Dr. Gibb, Janelle, and all the nurses at the CRH, unit 4C, who showed compassion & comfort to a husband, father & grandfather.

There will be no funeral service due to COVID-19. A private service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery at a later date. Donations would be appreciated to the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen, 802, 2A Ave. N., Lethbridge, T1H 0C9, or the Lethbridge Food Bank Society, 1016 – 2 Ave. S., Lethbridge, T1J 0C9.

Please enjoy a game of golf, volunteer, pray a decade of the Rosary, or visit a friend, in remembrance of Roy.
