Aileen grew up on the Siksika Reserve. She went to the Old Sun Residential School till Grade 8. When she left school she had to take care of her dear Mother Rosie who suffered from a spinal injury for several years. Then she moved to Calgary and worked at Mount Royal College, then returned to Siksika and worked at the Native Hospital. While she was in Calgary, she met the love of her life, her future husband Horace at the Calgary Stampede. They had a long courtship of seven years before they got married. Their marriage vows were all in Blackfoot and Family said it was a grand day as the Ayoungman and Gladstone Families witnessed this Special Day. They moved and started to raise their family and had Five daughters. They were married for over 50 years until Horace’s passing.

Mom was a very social person; wherever we went she made friends. She always had a smile and had a way with people. She had many friends. Our parents loved to travel and Mother loved going to Pow Wows all over North America. Mom and Dad taught us the importance of Family and made sure we knew our Family and always there for Family; Weddings, Funerals, and any time that they were needed or could help Family out. We moved around as Dad’s jobs required him to move alot. My Mother was able to set up her home in different places in Alberta. We admired her for her courage to leave home and live in remote places like Habay to stand by Dad. Mother was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Our Mother opened her home to having students stay with us. She fondly remembered them and would talk and reminisce about her memories of each of them; Patsy, Barbara, Angie, Clara, Roma, Elnora and our foster brother Matthew. Mom was very encouraging, supportive, gave her family and friends unconditional love. Mom cared for her family and extended family and opened her doors to visitors and Family. We shared mother with everyone as People would adopt her as their Mother. She had a great sense of humor. She often joked with her health care workers (Wilma, Susan and Frankie) who assisted with her care at home.

Mom was well respected by her friends and associates. She kept in touch with her Lion friends until they passed on. She was a very faithful friend, a loyal friend for life.

Mother will be missed by her Family and Friends and we are grateful to all those that have reached out to us to give us their condolences. We would like to mention how grateful we were that Alexis retired early from her nursing career to take care of Mom and to help her to be with us as long as she was. Alexis was an excellent nurse. Mom was blessed with Alexis’s diligent care. We all pitched in to help Our Mother out. She was our World and she made sure that she continued the Family Traditions that Dad and her had done prior to his passing. Mother had a very sharp mind and knew birthdays, anniversaries and loved Hockey. She was amazing knowing names and plays and she loved her Oilers. Aileen was a strong, devout Anglican and very much involved in the Anglican Cursillo movement.
