1941 – 2020

Rita Denise McEwen passed quietly on Sunday August 30, 2020 at age 78, in Lethbridge, Alberta where she was a long-term resident and a cherished member of the community. Rita was born in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan on September 3rd, 1941. She was predeceased by her first husband, Gordon Roy Masson in 1972. She married Fredrick Nash McEwen in 1975, and he predeceased her in 2007.

Rita is survived by her brother Louis Damphousse, and her children Richard Masson (Cathy), Marilyn Meyer (Marlin) and Heather Masson. Rita and Fred welcomed many children into their home over several decades, and both of her daughters continue to do the same. All of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren benefited from her love and guidance and will greatly miss her.

Rita worked for many years, including at the Lethbridge Herald, Alberta Sugar Beet Growers’ Association and Alberta Mental Heath. She was also active in many organizations, including the Alberta Foster Parent’s Association, Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre and the Pioneer Pemican Club, where she was instrumental in publishing its history book. Rita loved dancing, camping, golfing and crafts such as paper tole, painting, and sewing. After retiring and Fred’s passing, she traveled extensively including to Europe, the Caribbean, China, and Hawaii. Rita’s greatest love was her family and she cherished family get togethers that filled the house with happiness and unconditional love.
