SMETANY

STEPHEN JOSEPH SMETANY, beloved husband of Gladys Smetany, of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Chinook Regional Hospital on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at the age of 82 years.

Besides his wife Gladys, Stephen is survived by his daughter Tara (Ken) Hunter-Jarvie of Lethbridge, son Gregory (Karyn) Smetany of Las Vegas and sister Marina Smetany, as well as six grandchildren: Kanyon, Kennedy, Stephen, Haley, Dustyn and Dylan.

He was predeceased by his parents, Steve and Helen Smetany and sister Barbara.

Stephen was born on January 28th, 1939, to parents Steve and Helen Smetany of Diamond City. He later moved to Lethbridge and met his wife, Gladys, at age 22. They later had children Greg and Tara during their 57-year marriage.

Stephen, or more commonly known as Steve, went on to become a skilled auto body mechanic who always took great care and pride in his work. Constantly fixing something, Steve was considered quite the “MacGyver” by his family, who always knew he could help with all of their problems. He was gifted in the area of repurposing anything old or broken. He loved being outside, especially on his lawn, as he took great care to make sure his lawn was the greenest on the block. Although, if he wasn’t outside, you could most likely find him inside enjoying one of many long naps or eating up his wife’s delicious Ukrainian pierogis or cabbage rolls. His 1987 Ford Bronco was another great source of pride for him, and it always gained him many compliments wherever he went.

Steve was a great father and grandfather, and we always felt his deep love for us. Papa, I’m sure right now, you are up there having a great time on your little boat and catching the biggest fish ever.

Thanks to the staff in 4C at the Chinook Regional Hospital, especially Kerri, Dr. Garden and Dr. Plotnyk.

A Celebration of Life will be held at ROYAL VIEW MEMORIAL CEMETERY, 5920 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge, AB, on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. with a luncheon to follow.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Steve, donations may be made to STARS Air Ambulance (stars.ca/ways-to-donate/ab/)
