Paul Rempel

1933 – 2021

It is with heavy and grieving hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, PAUL LORNE REMPEL, husband of the late Kathleen (Kaye) Rempel on Monday, September 6, 2021, in Lethbridge at the age of 88 years.

Paul was born in Herbert, SK on May 10, 1933. His parents emigrated in 1928 with his older brother and along with so many other Russian Mennonites coming to Canada at that time. They settled in Ebenezer, SK and then homesteaded in Parkerview where he spent his early years living in a log house, attending school and working the farm with his older sisters.

He left home at a young age to see the world. To him the world was southern Saskatchewan to Pincher Creek where he traveled back and forth working at numerous farms. He ended up in Swift Current working for Standard Motors where he worked towards his welding ticket and took an interest in auto body.

It was during this time he met the love of his life, Kaye, when he rescued her from a flat tire. They married June 3, 1960.

They lived in Saskatchewan for a few years before applying for a job at Enerson Motors in Lethbridge while driving through on their way to Coleman to visit Kaye’s parents. Two weeks later they were living in Lethbridge. He attended SAIT to earn his auto body technician ticket while working at Enerson’s and stayed on when it changed to Davis for 35 years. Past retirement he continued doing odd jobs for Davis, welding and making their tire racks. Throughout the years, he loved to take apart and rebuild vehicles. His favourite project was his 1978 red GMC pickup truck, which he was still driving.

He loved the outdoors and camping and even designed and built his own camper to take his family to the mountains where he loved to fly fish. They enjoyed many years in the Crowsnest Pass, Fort Macleod and Waterton. One of his all-time favourite activities was fly fishing in the Crowsnest pass.

He loved his two daughters and would do everything and anything for them. He taught them how to fish, ride bikes, skate, and swim. He fixed their vehicles and came with his toolbox without question.

He could fix almost anything and if he couldn’t, he would build it. In his later years he could be found in the garage puttering, or with the neighbors building sheds, tiling roofs, cutting down trees, moving his garage, or helping with vehicles.

As he got older, he slowed down, but never stopped. He still kept busy in his yard and garden during the day and watching old movies and TV shows in the evening.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters Kimberly Rempel, Kelly Rempel (Wally Korver); nephew and nieces Eric (Andrea) Rempel and their three daughters; David (Sharilyn) Westworth, Gerry (Reta) Westworth, Judy (Morris) Sawchuk, Susan (Tim) Schraeder and their families.

He was predeceased by his wife Kathleen (Kaye) Rempel; his parents, Peter and Anna Rempel; brother and sister-in-law Peter and Iris Rempel; sister and brother-in-law Hilda and George Rempel, and sister Katharina Rempel.

Special thanks to Ed for the years of help and friendship and Marlene for the great baking and wonderful cinnamon buns.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, September 13, 2021, at MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, Lethbridge, Alberta.
