Andrew “Andy” Kocsis

1936 – 2021

Mr. Andrew Kocsis of Lethbridge, beloved husband of Mrs. Josephine “Jo” Kocsis, passed away at Chinook Regional Hospital on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at the age of 85 years.

Andy was born in Pamleny, Hungary on March 5, 1936. His father Steve had immigrated to Canada and was later followed by Andy and his mother Mary on March 27, 1949 to Lethbridge, Alberta. It was a very big and challenging time, but they were happy to be here and make it their home.

Andy always said he learnt his English by enjoying and reading his comic books and surprisingly he had no Hungarian accent.

Due to his age when he immigrated to Canada, Andy was only able to complete Grade 8 and then entered the work force. He worked for a service station for a few years and then had an offer for a job at Huttons Ltd. Three older and knowledgeable men took him under their wings and taught Andy everything he knew. He worked there for 30 plus years and at the age of 51, his career ended due to a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer. He missed the customers and co-workers greatly and sadly was never able to work again.

Having no other family in Canada, Andy cultivated many friends through his time at work, camping and socializing. They were very important to him, and he cherished each and everyone.

He had several great passions; old automobiles, his guitar and the CFL. The Calgary Stampeders was his team and win or lose never changed his dedication for them.

His family was the most important interest in his life and loved each one dearly. Andy and Jo offered to babysit the youngest of their granddaughters for approximately 12 years and for him she was the highlight of each and every day.

Andy was predeceased by his parents Steve and Mary Kocsis.

Left to mourn his passing are his children Darla (Jim), and Tim (Jodi). His grandchildren Tarynn (Tyler) Marcotte, Baillie (Clint) Helm and Madysen Kocsis. He was also blessed with a sweet great-granddaughter Brinley Marcotte.

Also left to mourn is his dear sister-in-law Arlene Fenz and nephews Brian Fenz (Florea) and family, Darin Fenz (Kathy) and family and niece Debbie Tonin (Darcy) and family.

Andy’s wish was to be remembered privately by his family and friends. A private Family Graveside Service will be held.
