Wayne Ulmer

1943 – 2021

Wayne Ulmer, peacefully passed away on December 8th, in the loving arms of his wife and daughters.

Wayne was the loving husband of Justina (Jo), and father of Tracey Opper (Oral), Tara Bouw (Wes), Larry Lunseth (Kerry McColm) and Les Lunseth (Laurie). Wayne was the brother of Wendy Spivak (Dave), Rod Ulmer and Barry Ulmer. Wayne was the uncle and great uncle to Lee Lunseth, Landon Lunseth and son Evan, Adam Lunseth, wife Beth and children Audrey and Charles, Erin Pichurski, husband Chris and children Eddie and Willow-Anne, Laurel Borysuk, husband Trevor and children Gray and Tristan, and Briea Turner, husband Jaime and daughter Charlotte. Wayne is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Walt and Bunny (Ruth) Ulmer, and sister-in-law Carol Ulmer.

Dad was born on March 13, 1943 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Dad met the love of his life, Jo, in Bow Island one evening in early spring 1964 on his way to a dance. It was love at first sight and they got engaged that same year on mom’s birthday, September 11. Mom and Dad were married on January 15th, 1965 and welcomed their first daughter, Tracey, later that same year and their second daughter Tara 4 years later. Dad’s heart was full of joy with his girls and from then on, the grey hair started. Dad was like a big brother and friend to Les and Larry whom he loved very much. To dad, we were all one big happy family that he cherished.

Dad went to Olds College and worked for both the Alberta Government and the County of Warner for many years. Dad was an avid curler and golfer and member of Land O Lakes Golf Course.

Over the years, dad loved to go hunting wild birds, fishing, reading and spending time with his family and friends.

We know dad is already out golfing and will be enjoying a glass of red wine with his pizza!

At dad’s request, there will be no funeral service. A celebration of dad’s life will be held at a later date for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that you please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in Wayne’s name.

Cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.

So sorry to hear of waynes passing Justine, remembering some of the fun we had in the sixties .

  2. Dennis Mikalson says:

I am so sorry to hear that Wayne has passed away. I worked with Wayne or in the same building for a long time. He was such a well liked guy who loved practical jokes. Like taping the button down on the phone so it would ring and ring while the person frantically tried to answer. Or rearrange the letters on your office or desk sign to some silly thing. One time after loosing a hockey bet he glued the coins he owed to the guys desk.
One time he owed Stan a bottle from a sports bet. He wrapped it so nice and gave it to Stan. Who was scared it was a trip would not open it.
And one of the better curlers in the city and a consistent winner. Curled with him many times.
And a good family man, I remember well him talking proudly of the boys and his young daughters.
Remember him proudly, he deserves it.

  3. Jane Marsh says:

I’m so sorry to hear of Wayne’s passing. I worked with Wayne for years with the Irrigation Division. He was always happy, had a million friends; and knew everyone in Southern Alberta. I remember what a great curler he was and all the prizes he won. Wayne always contributed more than he took and was well liked and respected. I’m so glad to have known him. My condolences to Jo and the family.

  4. David Maldaner says:

Dear Jo, It’s quite a while since I had the privilege of working with Wayne, being his rodman while he surveyed most of the Felger Colony. I always appreciated his patience and sense of humour while he taught me how to handle the rod and pace off one hundred feet. I remember our visits and the delicious meals you served us when you invited us to your home. Good memories…Please accept my sincere condolences on Wayne’s passing. I wish we would have carried on our relationship.
    Sincerely
    Dave
