Susan Klassen

1933 – 2022

On January 1, 2022, our dear mom passed away peacefully in her home into God’s graces at the age of 88 years.

Susan Matilda Klassen was born on December 20, 1933, in Namaka AB to Cornelius and Anna Boschmann. In the early years of her life her family moved to Blue Ridge AB to homestead, living in a log cabin that her father built and later settled on a farm near Tofield AB. After her schooling, she went on to work in the Edmonton Hospital. Susan met the love of her life Dan at a Mennonite Provincial Youth Gathering in Rosemary. Susan also attended Mennonite Bible Institute in Didsbury where their friendship continued and eventually led to their marriage on a beautiful fall day October 23, 1955. Susan and Dan started married life together farming in Coaldale for 2 years, and then moved to Tofield for 2 years to continue farming there but after two successive crop failures due to weather they moved back to the farm in Coaldale where they raised their 3 children and farmed together for nearly 45 years. Susan was involved in the Goodwill Club at the Coaldale Mennonite Church where she was a member. She also volunteered for a number of years at the MCC store in Lethbridge.

Mom and Dad loved the mountains, spending time in Waterton and Montana every year. They even took up skiing and enjoyed doing that with their family. Mom was a very artistic and creative woman. She made doll furniture and sewed doll clothes, did artex, spent many hours sewing clothing for her children, enjoyed puzzles, embroidery, and crocheting many afghans for her children and grandchildren. She loved baking and cooking and made sure we never left her home hungry! She could also play a very competitive game of crokinole and usually won! She enjoyed working on their yard and in her flower beds which always had an abundance of beautiful roses. Mom was a quiet lady, soft spoken with a big heart and much love for her family. She loved her Lord and Savior, her beloved husband Dan, her children, precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her great grandchildren always put a smile on her face.

She is sadly missed by her son Bruce (Colleen) Klassen and their children Michelle (Ryan) Harding, Ashley (Morgan) Otte, Cameron (Elisha) Klassen; daughter Dianne (Brian) Hildebrandt and their children Lauren (Colin) Dueck, Lee (Paulina) Hildebrandt, Alana (Levi) Keith; daughter Brenda (Dennis) Holzli and their children Devon (Diana) Holzli, Brittany (Logan) Siebert; seven great grandchildren; brother David Boshmann; nieces and nephews.

Susan was pre-deceased by her loving husband Dan Klassen in 2007; parents Cornelius and Anna Boschmann; sisters Helen Heidebrecht, Margaret (who died in infancy) Anne Wiens.

A private family burial will be held, where Susan will be laid to rest in the Coaldale Mennonite Cemetery next to her husband Dan.
