Charles “Doc” Dowling

1921 – 2022

CHY “Doc” Dowling MWO, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 8, 2022 at the Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge, after a short battle with pneumonia.

Charles was born on March 9, 1921 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He is survived by his loving daughter Dory (David) Rossiter; granddaughter Lisa (Conrad) Schalk; great-grandchildren Megan (Loren) Wadstein, Brayden, Kaitlyn and Kyle; great-great- grandson Hunter Wadstein; sister-in-law Shirley McWalter and extended family in California, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario. He was predeceased by his first wife Theodora (Dory) and second wife Frances.

Doc enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces as a 17-year-old and served for 35 years, retiring as a Master Warrant Officer. As a member of the Fort Garry Horse and Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), his armoured regiment was part of major battles in Holland, Germany, Belgium and Italy during the Second World War. He was later posted back to Germany, served with the UN on peace keeping missions and was also posted to numerous military bases across Canada.

The military was a life he loved and after mandatory retirement spent over 30 years volunteering as the Southern Alberta Army Cadet Liaison. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion also serving a term as president of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No.4.

A Celebration of Doc’s Life will be held in the spring of 2022 with cremation entrusted to Martin Brothers Funeral Chapels.
