A Tribute to my Uncle

By Matthew Edwin Wayne Rauhala

My uncle enjoyed astronomy, surmising what could be written on a star

and watching Starship Enterprise chart them farther than afar.

He treasured his hikes in Waterton, exploring lakes and falls,

loved to stop for bubble gum ice cream inside the creamery walls.

His favorite game was Yahtzee, loved to roll the dice

and when it came time for dinner, it was deep fried shrimp and rice.

He had a passion for Sudokus, was excellent with numbers

but now his book rests dormant and his pencil is in slumber.

My uncle was fond of photography, taking pictures of the world,

today these albums are my memories, neatly organized, pages curled.

Cheering on the Broncos, later watching the Hurricanes score,

viewing movies on the big screen, hearing the Lethbridge Air Show’s roar.

Enjoying 70’s and 80’s music, visits to the Calgary Zoo,

taking trips to Hawaii, Los Angeles and Las Vegas too.

Is it predetermined that which is my fate?

Must I be on time or could I be a little late?

But if this is true and we don’t have a say,

no chance to hang on longer, to see another day,

I’ll remember your true heart, mind and all your selfless giving,

because when you and I were laughing, well uncle, that was living.

The sadness welled inside me when I heard that you had died,

but my fate is to see you again, years from now, on the other side.

Wayne will be remembered privately by his family and friends.

2 Condolences for “RAUHALA, Wayne Leroy”

  1. Pastor Richard Brown says:

We were saddened to hear of Wayne’s passing. While Immanuel Lutheran Church was still located on 6th Avenue, Wayne came by one day to see if there might be some volunteer work that he could become involved with. For a couple of years he came in most Fridays to help fold bulletins for the Sunday service. Conversations over lunch would often center on his family, especially his sister and his nephew Matthew who he absolutely adored. Wayne had a number of issues which we tried to assist him with and now we pray that he is at peace. We wish you God’s blessings in this time of sorrow. Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Richard Brown and Linnea

  2. Karen Nishiyama says:

Dear Debbie I am saddened to see that Wayne has passed away. I send you and Matthew my deepest sympathies at this time of loss.
