FANCEY, Hubert

Posted: May 9th, 2023

HUBERT FANCEY 1943 – 2023 Hubert (Herb/Herbie) Fancey of Lethbridge, Alberta (but Newfoundlander by birth and at heart), beloved husband of Velma Fancy, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at home on Friday, May 5, 2023, at the age of 79 years.
Besides his loving wife, Velma, Herb is survived and deeply missed by his three daughters, Debora Fancy (Ron Scott), Catharine Reader (Andrew Reader) and Tina Shingoose Fancy (Grant Shingoose), and his son, Jason (Jennifer) Fancey. Herb also leaves behind his grandchildren, Caitlin Fancy, Jesse Thompson, Kyra Thompson (Kevin Hart), Meagan Reader, Brandon Fancey, Kahsha Shingoose and Tadan Shingoose; sisters Rose TerMaaten and Phyllis Fancey; brothers Jim Fancey, Art (Shirley) Fancey, Everett (Linda) Fancey, Kevin (Rosealie) Fancey and Derrick Fancey; sister-in-law Marina Fancey, and many friends of Bill W.
Herb was predeceased by his parents George and Mary Fancey, his brother Dave Fancey, sister Marie Penney, brothers-in-law Will Penney and Gerry TerMaaten and sister-in-law Betty Fancey.
Herb was a giant of a man in a 5’4″ (ish) frame. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, a proud veteran, an avid gardener, an amazing cook, a fisherman, a poet and a philosopher who loved nothing more than solving the world’s problems (or at least try!). He was loud, gregarious, and loved a dirty joke (and often told them at inopportune times!). We would like to share one of Herb’s poems, written thirty years ago, that has great meaning at this time.
FREEDOM My wings were clipped But I can fly To lofty heights midst starry sky; Where others cannot go. My wings are spread, my spirit soars, Above an endless sea The myths, the burdens, anguish, Pain, has been a fallacy. And now anew my quest begins Horizons still unknown But this I know I shall not Fly over which I’ve flown. I’ve been released, I know not why A pleasure to be free Alone I sit reaching out So share this space with me. H. G. Fancey In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen in Herb’s name at 802 2 Ave A. North, Lethbridge, AB T1H 0C9 or lethbridgesoupkithen@gmail.com.
He loved nothing more than feeding the masses. So, let’s help Herbie feed the masses one more time!

  2. David Lewis says:

Judy and Dave Lewis offer their sincere condolences to sister Velma and the Fancey family for your the loss of your husband and dad. Herb stood tall and worked hard to live a meaningful and productive life. I will always remember the few times we spent cutting wood or at gran Gert and Pop Harold’s camp at Goodyear’s Cove. A Joker and a politician. RIP BIL Herb.
