ALEXANDRA SASHA MIRKOVICH 1931 – 2023 Alexandra “Sasha” Mirkovich (Ponomar) of Lethbridge, beloved wife of the late Don Mirkovich, passed away peacefully at St. Michaels Palliative Care on July 29, 2023, at the age of 91 years.
Sasha’s extraordinary life started in Novy Buh, Ukraine, born on September 27, 1931. Escaping World War II, the Ponomar family immigrated to Canada in 1949 to start their new life in Magrath, Alberta.
Sasha and Don met each other soon after. They were unable to speak each other’s language, but love and determination overcame the barrier. They married in 1952 and in the next few years had two sons, Gord, and Perry.
Her life was entirely devoted to her family. She seemed to have so much energy and accomplished so much in a day. Raising two very energetic boys, running the household, working for many years at Safeway, helping with Don’s trucking business, building numerous homes, growing a bountiful garden and always entertaining.
Sasha loved history and documented in great detail, the life of the Ponomar and Mirkovich families in Europe and Canada. She was meticulous with details and would label everything with dates, times, who, the occasion and where it was. Sasha had a time capsule with many photo albums detailing every event in her life, souvenirs she collected on their numerous trips to the Europe, the United States including Hawaii and many winters at their retirement home in Las Vegas. Sasha cherished and kept letters and mementos from friends and relatives. She seemed to remember everything and could answer any question in great detail.
Sasha was always active and had a real zest for life. From playing cards, dancing, and singing in the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Choir for 62 years. Sasha took great pride hosting the annual Slava at their house for 60 years. Sasha had an incredible amount of “Life Long” friends, she always kept in touch, regardless of distance.
Mom is lovingly remembered by her sons, Gord (Mary Ann), Perry (Sharmaine); her grandchildren, Shawn (Courtney), Nikki, Kayla (Bruce), and Kelsey; Her great grandchildren, Lukas, Jackson, Isabella, Ben, Holly, Austin and Alyssa; her sister, Mary; sister-in-law Stephanie; As well as her many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Serbia.
